Why a Prom Dress Is Not Just a Smaller Wedding Dress
A prom dress looks simpler than a wedding dress, but it comes with its own set of challenges that are easy to underestimate. The wearer is usually a school leaver between sixteen and nineteen, still growing and often buying the dress online or on a shopping trip where the fit was never checked properly in the first place. The dress is often bought to a trend rather than a classic — sequins, beading, a mermaid cut, an illusion neckline, a two-piece with a crop top and a long skirt — and those are the exact dresses that are hardest to alter well. The prom date is fixed and usually falls in the middle of an exam season when everyone is under pressure.
The first thing that shapes every prom dress we alter is the sequins-and-beading problem. A sequined or beaded prom dress cannot be hemmed like a plain satin dress because the decoration has to be removed by hand before the seam is opened, and reapplied so the pattern continues correctly after the seam is closed. That is slow, precise work, and it is what makes the difference between a dress that looks factory fresh at the prom and one that has an obvious seam across the hem. It is also the reason a sequined hem costs more than a plain one, and it is worth saying that honestly at the start.
The second thing is the fit problem that comes from online purchases. Many prom dresses are bought online because the exact colour or cut is not available in a Nairobi shop, and they arrive either one size too big or one size too small. A dress that is one size too big is usually straightforward to take in at the bodice, waist and seat, but a dress that is one size too small is a much harder job because there is rarely enough fabric to let out at every seam. In those cases, the honest answer is either a full bodice rebuild with a corset that gives the dress more structure, or a decision to send the dress back and pick a different size. We tell you which one it is on photo, before you spend anything.
The third thing is the prom season rush. In Kenya, prom season runs from around June through August for KCSE candidates and from around November through January for the second school leaving group, and everyone books their alterations in the same few weeks. Brides book six to eight weeks ahead. Prom girls usually book two to three weeks ahead, sometimes one. That is a very tight window for the kind of work a prom dress often needs. Getting the dress to us three to four weeks ahead of prom, even if the dress arrives late from abroad, is the difference between a proper alteration and a rushed one.
What we try to do for every prom client, whatever the timeframe, is tell the truth about what can and cannot be done. If a prom dress can be properly altered, we say so and give a firm price. If a prom dress cannot be altered to the fit the wearer is hoping for, we say so before pickup and either suggest a different approach — corsetry, a bodice rebuild, or a specific styling change — or advise the wearer to return the dress and pick a different size. Nothing goes onto the bench until the honest answer is on the table.

Hemming measured to your prom shoe
Hemming is the single most important alteration on a prom dress because it sets the line of the dress on the night. We measure the hem to the exact shoe the wearer will wear, not to a guess, and we leave enough depth in the hem to allow a small adjustment at the second fitting. Prom dress hemming only starts from KES 2,500, and sequin or beaded hems are quoted on photo. See bridal and formal wear alterations for the full formal wear service.
Bodice fitting at the bust and waist
Bodice fitting starts from KES 3,500 and covers the bust, waist and upper back. Prom dresses often gape at the bust, sit too low at the neckline or pinch at the waist, and all three are resolved by taking in or letting out the bodice at the correct seams. Where the internal structure has collapsed — very common on a dress that has been through a school photo shoot or a first fitting — the boning and interlining are reworked as part of the same job.
Strap and shoulder adjustment
Strap and shoulder adjustment starts from KES 1,800 and covers straps that dig into the shoulders, straps that slip, spaghetti straps that need shortening or repositioning, and halter or cross-back straps that need adjusting. Spaghetti straps are often the first thing to fail on a prom dress because they take the entire weight of a gown, and we reinforce the strap attachment points as part of the same job.
Sequin and beading repair
Sequin and beading repair starts from KES 2,500 and covers loose sequins that need resecuring, sections that have lost their decoration, and fragile areas that need reinforcing before the dress is worn. Where the original sequins or beads cannot be matched exactly, we source the closest available match and blend the new decoration into the existing pattern so the repair is invisible at normal viewing distance.
Ball gown and mermaid dress reshaping
Ball gown and mermaid dress reshaping starts from KES 6,500 and covers taking in or letting out the bodice, adjusting the waist and seat, resizing the hip and skirt line for a mermaid dress, and reshaping the volume of a ball gown skirt so it falls correctly. Mermaid dresses are especially demanding because the fit is unforgiving at the hip and thigh, and the internal structure has to be reworked to support the silhouette properly.
Corset installation and lining work
Corset installation on a prom dress starts from KES 8,000 and covers an internal corset with boning, a lace-up back where required and a matching inner lining. Lining replacement starts from KES 5,500 and covers a lining that has worn, gone soft or discoloured. Both are common on prom dresses that are being worn again for a second event or that were bought second hand.
Full rebuild and restoration
A full prom dress rebuild starts from KES 11,000 and covers bodice, waist, seat, hem, straps, lining and structure as one programme with two to three fittings. Full restoration starts from KES 15,000 and is appropriate for a dress being brought back into service after storage, or a second-hand dress that needs work across multiple areas. Both are priced on photo and confirmed on inspection.
Prom Dress Programme Timeline
The standard programme runs three to four weeks ahead of the prom date. Every prom booking is scheduled against this timeline and we confirm the schedule at booking.

- 3 weeks beforeDress collected on a scheduled pickup, in a protective garment bag, on a dedicated rider. Assessed the same day.

- 1 week beforeSecond fitting. Final adjustments, strap check, sequin or beading work confirmed.
- 3 days beforeFinal pickup of the finished dress, in a protective garment bag, ready for the prom.
- Rush programmeInside two weeks is possible where capacity allows and is quoted at booking. Inside one week is only possible for simple work such as straps, small hem adjustments or sequin repair.
What to Bring to the First Fitting
Bring the shoes the wearer will wear to prom, or the exact heel height if the shoes have not been bought yet. Bring the correct underwear for the dress — strapless, low-back, seamless or whichever style the dress was cut for. Bring the dress itself if you are coming in person, or we will have it at the workshop already from pickup. If there is a matching shawl, a handbag or jewellery that will sit against the neckline, bring those too. The more of the prom-night set is present at the first fitting, the more accurate the fit will be on the night.

Why Prom Dress Alterations Matter in Nairobi
A Nairobi prom is not a two-hour event. It usually runs from mid-afternoon photos through a formal dinner to a party that finishes late, and for many girls it is the single most photographed night of their school life. The dress gets eight or ten hours of wear, several outfit changes of environment — outdoor photo shoot, indoor dinner, dance floor — and enough movement that any weak point in the fit will show up in the pictures. That is why a proper prom dress alteration is worth the effort, and why we push so hard on getting the dress to us at least three weeks before the date.
The first thing Nairobi's climate does to a prom dress is swell and relax the fabric across the day. A satin or sequined dress that fits perfectly in the cool of the afternoon can feel tighter by the evening when the wearer's body is warm and the fabric has taken on the humidity of the venue. That is why we always advise a bodice fit that is snug but not tight, and why we leave enough depth in the bodice to allow a small adjustment if the wearer's measurements change between fittings. A dress fitted too tightly on a cool Nairobi afternoon will be uncomfortable by 9pm.
The second thing Nairobi does is test the hem and the train. Outdoor photography on grass, on gravel or in gardens picks up moisture in the hem, and a long dress or a train picks up fine grit from Nairobi's dry-season ground. That moisture and grit work into the hem and the decoration faster than most people expect, and if the hem is not finished with a clean edge and proper depth, the decoration along the hem line will start to dull by the end of the night. We always recommend a hem depth that lets the wearer lift the dress slightly during outdoor photography so the hem edge stays clean.
The third thing is the prom season itself. In Kenya, prom season clusters into a few weeks in June to August for KCSE candidates and again in November to January for the second school leaving group. Everyone books their alterations in the same window, everyone wants the same turnaround, and everyone is under exam pressure at the same time. Getting the dress to us three weeks ahead rather than one week ahead is the single biggest thing a family can do to protect the alteration, and it is why we quote honestly on what can and cannot be done inside each window.
Finally, a Nairobi prom dress is often bought to a specific look. Sequins, a mermaid cut, an illusion neckline, a two-piece with a crop top and a long skirt — the more fashion-forward the dress, the harder it is to alter well. A sequin dress that has to be opened at a seam where the sequins run across the seam line is much harder than the same adjustment on a plain satin dress. We work with what the dress is, and we tell you on photo whether the alteration you are hoping for is realistic or whether a different approach will give a better result.
Altered by David Ochieng, 14 Years on the Bench
Every prom dress collected at FitFix is worked on at the Industrial Area workshop by David Ochieng, the workshop's master tailor and formal wear alterations specialist with fourteen years of experience. David trained and worked on tailoring and leather repair at Manix Clothing Store City Walk and at Italian Mens Wear in Nairobi before opening FitFix. He has since handled hundreds of prom dress alterations, from a simple strap adjustment on a dress that fit well to a full rebuild on a dress that was bought two sizes off and needed a completely new interior structure to sit correctly on the wearer.
David's approach to a prom dress is deliberately careful. He assesses the fabric and the decoration first, because a sequined or beaded dress needs a different method from the same alteration on a plain satin dress. He works on the least visible seam wherever possible, removing and resecuring sequins and beads by hand so the pattern continues correctly across the new seam. He builds boning and structure that matches the wearer's frame, not the standard model, and he tests the fit at two fittings wherever the schedule allows. Most importantly, he tells the truth about what a specific dress can and cannot be altered to, before any work begins.

Prom dress alterations in Nairobi start from KES 2,500 for hemming only and KES 1,800 for strap adjustment. Bodice fitting at the bust and waist starts from KES 3,500. Sequin and beading repair starts from KES 2,500. The basic alteration package covering hem, straps and simple bodice adjustment starts from KES 5,500. Ball gown and mermaid dress reshaping starts from KES 6,500. Corset installation starts from KES 8,000. Lining replacement starts from KES 5,500. Full rebuild starts from KES 11,000. Full restoration starts from KES 15,000. Send photos on WhatsApp 0705 728 896 for a firm price.
When should I book prom dress alterations in Nairobi?
We recommend booking prom dress alterations in Nairobi at least three to four weeks before the prom date. This allows one first fitting, a second fitting ten days later and a final pickup about five days before the event. Rush work inside two weeks is possible where capacity allows and is quoted at booking. Inside one week is only possible for simple work such as straps, a small hem adjustment or sequin repair.
Do you offer free pickup and delivery for prom dress alterations in Nairobi?
Yes. Pickup and delivery is free across Nairobi including Westlands, Karen, Kilimani, Lavington, Kileleshwa, Parklands, Riverside, Langata, Kasarani, Embakasi, Ngong, Ruiru, Kiambu Road, South B, South C and every other estate in the ring. Prom dress pickup is done on a scheduled slot, and the dress is carried in a protective garment bag on collection and on return so the sequins, beading and fabric are not crushed.
Can you shorten a prom dress with sequins or beads on the hem?
Yes. Prom dress hemming with sequins or beads starts from KES 2,500. The hem is opened at the least visible seam, the sequins or beads are removed and resecured by hand where necessary, the hem is shortened to the correct length, and the decoration is reapplied so the pattern continues correctly. Heavy sequin work takes longer and is quoted on photo.
Can you repair a prom dress where sequins have fallen off or a beaded section has come loose?
Yes. Sequin and beading repair starts from KES 2,500 and covers resecuring loose sequins and beads, rebuilding a section that has lost its decoration, and reinforcing fragile areas before a wearer takes the dress out for the event. Where the original sequins cannot be matched exactly, we source the closest available match and blend the new sequins into the existing pattern.
Can you reshape a ball gown or mermaid prom dress that does not fit properly?
Yes. Ball gown and mermaid dress reshaping starts from KES 6,500 and covers taking in or letting out the bodice, adjusting the waist and seat, resizing the hip and skirt line for a mermaid dress, and reshaping the volume of a ball gown skirt so it falls correctly. The internal structure is reworked as part of the same job where needed.
Can you install a corset in a prom dress that came with only a zip back?
Yes. Corset installation on a prom dress starts from KES 8,000 and covers the fitting and stitching of an internal corset with boning, a lace-up back where required and a matching inner lining so the corset does not show through the dress. Corsetry is common for prom dresses that have been bought with a zip back but need more structure for the wearer to feel secure across a long evening.
How many fittings do I need for prom dress alterations in Nairobi?
Most prom dress alterations need two fittings. The first fitting happens about seven to ten days after the first pickup when the main adjustments have been tacked in place. The second fitting happens about a week later when the dress is ready for a final check. Simple alterations such as straps or a small hem adjustment may need only one fitting plus a final pickup. Full rebuilds and corset installations sometimes need a third fitting.
Can parents pay for prom dress alterations on delivery rather than a deposit upfront?
Yes. FitFix does not require a deposit, no inspection fee and no hidden charges on any prom dress alteration. Payment is made on delivery by M-Pesa, cash or bank transfer once the finished dress is back in your hands. Parents often pay on the daughter's behalf at delivery, and we can invoice in the parent's name on request.
Can I book prom dress alterations for a group of friends on one pickup?
Yes. We handle group prom dress bookings for two or more friends from the same school or class on one pickup, one invoice and one delivery. Group bookings get the same per-dress standard as individual bookings, with each dress fitted to the wearer's measurements and returned ahead of the prom date. Send photos of each dress on WhatsApp 0705 728 896 for a group quote.

Send two photos to WhatsApp 0705 728 896. One of the dress on the wearer and one close up of the area that needs work, plus your prom date. David reads them and comes back with a firm price, a programme scheduled against your prom date, and the exact pickup window for the first collection. If the honest answer is that the dress cannot be altered as you are hoping, he tells you that too and you owe us nothing. No deposit, no inspection fee, M-Pesa, cash or bank transfer, parents can pay on delivery.
