"Westlands is the busiest tailoring neighbourhood in Nairobi. Everyone who lives in Westlands is either going to a meeting in the morning, working through the afternoon, or heading straight from the office to dinner. Nobody has two hours to sit in a tailor's shop waiting for a fitting. That is exactly why we work the way we work. One message on WhatsApp, a rider collects from your office building or apartment reception the same day, and the fitted garment comes back on a hanger within three to five working days."

Westlands is the office capital of Nairobi. Thousands of professionals work in the towers along Waiyaki Way, Ring Road Westlands and Peponi Road, hundreds of expats live in the serviced apartments around Woodvale Grove and Delta Corner, and every one of those people wears clothes that need alterations on a schedule that does not fit a normal tailor's shop hours. Most tailors in Westlands open at nine and close at six, and most of their clients are in meetings from nine to six. That is the entire problem in one sentence. Here is how we solve it, and why a tailor who understands the Westlands rhythm is the only tailor worth using if you actually work here.
The average Westlands professional leaves their apartment at seven in the morning, works through the day with at most a forty-five-minute lunch, and gets home at eight or nine in the evening. There is no window in that schedule to visit a tailor's shop, wait for a fitting, and come back two days later to collect. The only thing that works for a Westlands professional is a service that comes to their building. We collect from your office reception or your apartment lobby during working hours, take your garment to the workshop in Industrial Area, do the alteration, and deliver it back to the same reception or lobby within three to five working days. The first time you see the fitted garment is when you try it on at your own door. That is the entire value proposition, and it is the reason more than a hundred Westlands professionals have used FitFixClothesAlterations.co.ke in the last two years. Book tailor open today in Westlands Nairobi with free doorstep collection and payment on collection after a proper fit check and we will arrange the pickup window around your meetings.
A person working in Westlands is more likely to be in a suit, a blazer, a structured dress or a professional shirt than a person working in any other Nairobi neighbourhood. The law firms, the banks, the multinational offices and the consulting firms along Waiyaki Way all have a dress code that expects a tailored fit. That means the alterations Westlands clients need are not the same as the alterations a person in another neighbourhood needs. A Westlands professional does not want a shirt taken in for a casual fit. They want a shirt taken in at the waist and at the side seams so that when it is tucked in under a suit jacket, the shirt does not billow at the back. That is a completely different alteration from a standard shirt slimming, and it is the sort of alteration we do every week for clients in Westlands.
Westlands is a neighbourhood of Zoom calls, Teams meetings, presentation days and client pitches. A collar that flops, a sleeve that shows too much shirt cuff on camera, a blazer that pulls across the chest when the wearer sits down at a desk, all of these details read on camera in a way they do not read in person. When we alter a garment for a Westlands client, we always ask what the garment is for. If it is a blazer for video calls, we check the collar roll and the shoulder line more carefully than usual. If it is a shirt for presentation days, we check the cuff opening so the wearer's watch shows correctly. If it is a dress for a client dinner, we check the waist fit so the wearer can sit for two hours without having to adjust the dress. That is the level of detail a Westlands client expects, and it is the level we deliver.
Most Westlands apartments are between forty and eighty square metres. There is not much hanging space. Coats get folded into a wardrobe, suits get stacked on top of each other, dresses get pushed to the back of a closet. When a Westlands client brings us a garment for alteration, we often find small problems the client did not know about. A suit jacket with a crushed shoulder from being hung on a wire hanger. A dress with a hidden crease from being folded under another dress. A shirt with a faded collar from being washed and dried without enough space to hang properly. When we do a Westlands alteration, we always check the garment for storage damage first. If the fix is small, we handle it free. If the fix needs real work, we tell the client upfront and quote it separately. That is the difference between a tailor who just does what was asked and a tailor who actually takes care of your wardrobe.
Westlands clients are often travelling, often hosting, often attending an event with three days' notice. A client who lives in Westlands and works in a company on Waiyaki Way might get a message on Monday that they are hosting a client dinner on Thursday. On Wednesday morning they notice the trousers are too long or the dress does not fit right. That is a forty-eight-hour alteration. We handle these requests constantly for Westlands clients. Rush service is KSh 500 and turns around in forty-eight hours, subject to availability. If you message us before 1pm on Tuesday, the garment is at the workshop by Tuesday afternoon, altered on Wednesday, and back in your hands by Thursday morning. That is the schedule Westlands clients actually need, and it is the schedule we deliver. Order tailor near me open now in Westlands Nairobi with same day collection and M-Pesa payment on collection day for any garment and we will confirm the rush window on WhatsApp before the rider arrives.
A KSh 1,200 trouser hem on a KSh 12,000 pair of Westlands office trousers is a rescue, because the trouser goes back into rotation and stays there for years. A KSh 2,500 bodice take-in on a KSh 15,000 dress is a rescue, because the dress goes from the back of the wardrobe to the front. A KSh 4,500 suit jacket alteration on a KSh 60,000 three-piece is a rescue, because the suit was expensive but never fit properly, and now it does. The clients who get the most out of a Westlands tailor are the ones who send us a photo on WhatsApp, get an accurate quote, and let the rider handle the rest. That is the same standard we hold on suit alterations, blazer alterations and shirt alterations. Hire professional tailors in Westlands Nairobi with free pickup, 48 hour rush service and pay on collection after fit check and we will collect today and deliver back fitted by the end of the week.
Westlands clients wear a wider range of garments than clients in any other Nairobi neighbourhood. A Westlands professional might be in a wool suit on Monday morning, a smart-casual shirt on Tuesday, jeans and a blazer on Wednesday, a dress for a client dinner on Thursday, and a wedding outfit on Saturday. That is five different garment types in five days, and every one of them needs alteration at some point. Here is what we handle for Westlands clients most often, and how each service works.
Suit alterations are the most common service we deliver to Westlands. The most frequent job is the sleeve shortening, because most ready-to-wear suits come with sleeves that are two to three centimetres too long for the average Westlands professional. Sleeve shortening on a suit jacket is KSh 1,800 and takes 3 to 5 working days. We remove the cuff buttons, shorten the sleeve from the cuff end, and re-attach the buttons at exactly the same distance from the new cuff edge. The second most common job is the waist take-in, because a suit that fits the shoulders and the chest often gapes at the waist when the client stands. Waist take-in on a suit jacket is from KSh 3,000 depending on whether the jacket is fused, half-canvassed or fully canvassed. The third most common job is the trouser hem, which is KSh 1,000 for a standard suit trouser. Most Westlands clients send us a full three-piece suit in one pickup and we handle everything together.
Blazer alterations are the second most common service we deliver to Westlands. A blazer is worn differently from a suit jacket. It is worn open at the office, worn buttoned at a client lunch, and worn over a shirt or a t-shirt depending on the day. That means the blazer has to fit correctly in three different situations, not just one. When we alter a blazer for a Westlands client, we check the fit with the jacket buttoned and unbuttoned. If the blazer is going to be worn over a t-shirt on some days and a shirt on other days, we take the fit measurements over the thicker of the two garments. Blazer sleeve shortening is KSh 1,800. Blazer waist take-in is from KSh 3,000. Blazer re-lining is from KSh 5,500. See our blazer alterations page for the full service breakdown.
Shirt alterations are the third most common service we deliver to Westlands. Westlands professionals wear dress shirts every day, and most off-the-rack dress shirts fit well at the collar and the sleeves but are too generous at the waist. When a dress shirt is tucked under a suit jacket, that extra fabric at the waist creates a billow at the back that reads on every photograph and every video call. We slim dress shirts at the waist and the side seams only, keeping the chest and the shoulders untouched. We also shorten shirt sleeves when the sleeve covers the shirt cuff opening and the watch. Sleeve shortening on a dress shirt is KSh 1,200. Waist slimming on a dress shirt is KSh 1,500. Both take 3 to 5 working days. Book alterations near me in Westlands Nairobi with free home pickup and M-Pesa on collection today for suits and dresses and we will collect a whole wardrobe of shirts in one pickup and return them together.
Trouser alterations are the fourth most common service we deliver to Westlands. Office trousers take more wear than any other garment in a Westlands wardrobe. They are worn every day, they take the friction of the office chair, and the seat and the crotch start to show age after a couple of years. When we alter a Westlands client's trousers, we check the seat first. A trouser that fits well at the waist but bags at the seat is a trouser with a seat problem, not a waist problem, and the fix is a seat adjustment from KSh 1,500 rather than a waist take-in. We also check the hem break, because a trouser that breaks too high on the shoe reads too short, and a trouser that breaks too low on the shoe reads too long, and either one shows on every step the client takes. Trouser hem is KSh 1,000. Waist take-in is KSh 1,500. Seat adjustment is KSh 1,500.
Dress alterations for Westlands clients are usually for work events, client dinners, weekend parties and wedding season. The most common alterations are hem shortening, waist take-in and bodice adjustment. For a structured work dress, the alteration has to keep the shoulders and the neckline exactly as they are while bringing the waist in from the side seams. For a softer evening dress, the alteration can move a little more freely across the bodice. For a silk or chiffon dress, the alteration has to be done by hand to preserve the drape. Dress hem shortening on a simple fabric is KSh 1,500. Bodice take-in is KSh 2,500. Silk dress work is from KSh 3,000. We handle every dress fabric from polyester to silk crepe to chiffon over satin, and we quote accurately because we see the fabric at the pickup. See our bridal and formal wear alterations page for the fuller dress service.
Bridesmaid dress alterations for Westlands brides are a coordinated job for four to eight dresses. When a Westlands bride has bridesmaids spread across the city, we collect from each bridesmaid separately on a single agreed day, measure each bridesmaid in the wedding shoes, cut the hems to a coordinated finished length across the whole party, and deliver the whole party together two weeks before the wedding. Bulk rate applies from three dresses. Bridesmaid dress hem shortening is KSh 1,500 on simple fabrics and from KSh 4,000 on beaded work. The full wedding party coordination service is included from three dresses. See our bridesmaid dress alterations page for the full coordination process. Book bridesmaid dress alterations in Westlands Nairobi with free home pickup and M-Pesa on collection today for every bridesmaid and we will coordinate the whole party from a single collection day.
Wedding dress alterations for Westlands brides are the most careful work we do. A wedding dress is usually a single dress for one bride, cut from a delicate fabric with more detail preservation than any other garment. When we alter a wedding dress for a Westlands bride, we do a group of fittings rather than a single fitting. The first fitting is a basted fitting where the dress is stitched with long loose stitches so we can see how it hangs on the bride's body. The second fitting is the forward fitting where the dress is in its final shape but the finishing still has to be done. The third fitting is the final fitting. Wedding dress hem shortening starts at KSh 3,500 depending on the fabric and the amount of lace or beading. See our bridal and formal wear alterations page for the full service. Book wedding dress alterations in Westlands Nairobi with free home pickup, door delivery and payment on collection for every Nairobi bride today and we will book the first fitting within 24 hours of the pickup.
Zipper repairs are the most common small job we deliver to Westlands. A broken trouser fly zip, a failed dress zip, a stuck jacket zip, or a broken bag zip can all be handled in three to five working days. Trouser zip replacement is KSh 800. Dress zip replacement is KSh 900. Jacket zip replacement is from KSh 1,200. Leather jacket zip replacement is from KSh 1,500. Bag zip replacement is from KSh 1,000. Every zip we fit is a YKK or a Riri where the original was a Riri, matched to the weight of the original zip. Every zip is tested closed, at the bend, and open-reclose before the garment leaves the bench. See our zipper replacement services page for the full zip service. Order zipper repair near me in Westlands Nairobi with free home collection and M-Pesa on collection today for any zipper and we will collect within 24 hours.
Our riders cover Westlands so often that they know the reception desks, the loading bays, the security procedures and the parking situation at almost every building. When you send us your pickup address, we do not need directions. Here is a partial list of the Westlands buildings and streets we collect from most often. If your building is not on the list, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight whether the rider can reach you. Most weeks, yes.
We collect from every major office tower, serviced apartment, residential block and hotel in Westlands. That includes the towers along Waiyaki Way, the buildings along Ring Road Westlands, the serviced apartments around Woodvale Grove, the offices on Peponi Road, the residential blocks on Rhapta Road, the buildings on Muthithi Road and Westlands Road, the offices around Delta Corner and ABC Place, the shopping areas around Sarit Centre, Westgate and The Hub, the towers on Mpaka Road and Parklands Road, and every residential apartment and serviced apartment in between. We also collect from the neighbouring streets of Parklands, Highridge, Kyuna, Spring Valley and Loresho on the same rider route.
Westlands is one of the fastest moving neighbourhoods in Nairobi for buildings. If you work or live in a building that has opened in the last year, the rider may not know it yet. Send us the building name and the street, plus a photo of the entrance, and we will find it on the first attempt. Same for offices inside business parks and shared workspaces along Waiyaki Way and Ring Road Westlands, we will coordinate with your reception or the workspace management if the entrance requires it.
We keep a record of what Westlands clients send us most often, because the pattern tells us more about what a Westlands wardrobe needs than any survey ever could. Here are the top ten Westlands alterations, ranked by how often we do them, with the actual price and turnaround for each one. If your wardrobe has the same problems, this is what it will cost to fix them.
The most common Westlands alteration, every week. Ready-to-wear suit sleeves come two to three centimetres too long for the average build, and the client notices it every time they reach for a document or a coffee. We shorten from the cuff end, re-attach the buttons at the same distance from the new cuff edge, and return the jacket within 3 to 5 working days. For a Westlands client with a busy calendar, this is the alteration that makes the largest visual difference for the smallest amount of money.
The second most common Westlands alteration. Office trousers come long, and the average Westlands professional is not the same height as the trouser was cut for. We shorten the trouser with a machine straight hem for office trousers or a turn-up for heavier fabrics, and we return them within 3 to 5 working days. Every hem is pressed through a muslin cloth at medium heat so the trouser does not shine at the cuff.
The third most common Westlands alteration. Off-the-rack dress shirts fit correctly at the collar and the shoulders but billow at the waist, especially under a suit jacket. We slim the waist and the side seams only, keeping the chest and the shoulders untouched. This is the alteration that makes a shirt look tailored rather than borrowed.
The fourth most common Westlands alteration. A blazer that fits the shoulders and the chest but gapes at the waist is the single most common blazer problem in the world. We take in the waist from the side seams only, never the front panel, because the front panel has the lapel roll and the button stance, and both of those are fixed by the original maker. Turnaround is 4 to 6 working days.
The fifth most common Westlands alteration, especially among women who work in Westlands offices and attend client dinners. A work dress that sits too low shows too much leg at the wrong moment and reads too casual for the office. We shorten the hem with the correct finish for the fabric, whether that is a machine straight hem on a structured fabric or a rolled hem on chiffon.
The sixth most common Westlands alteration. A client buys a trouser that fits the hip but is loose at the waist, and the trouser slides down through the day. We take in the waist from the back seam and the side seams, preserving the belt loops and the pocket openings. Turnaround is 3 to 5 working days.
The seventh most common Westlands alteration. Suit trousers come long, and a suit trouser hem is done slightly differently from an office trouser hem because it uses a blind stitch that is invisible from the outside. We set the hem over the dress shoes the client will wear with the suit, at the correct break. Turnaround is 3 to 5 working days.
The eighth most common Westlands alteration. Westlands clients who work in tech, media and creative offices wear jeans to the office, and a jean with too long a hem reads as a jean that does not fit. We shorten jean hems on a chain-stitch machine so the original rope-stitch look of the hem is preserved, which is not possible with a standard lock-stitch hem. Turnaround is 3 to 5 working days.
The ninth most common Westlands alteration. A failed zip is the fastest way to take a garment out of rotation, and Westlands clients notice zips failing at the worst possible moment. We fit YKK or Riri zips matched to the original weight, and every zip is tested closed, at the bend, and open-reclose before the garment leaves the bench. Turnaround is 3 to 5 working days.
The tenth most common Westlands alteration. Westlands brides are some of our best wedding party clients, because a Westlands bride usually has bridesmaids spread across the city and needs a coordinating service rather than a standard tailor. We collect from each bridesmaid separately on a single day, measure each in the wedding shoes, cut all hems to a coordinated length, and deliver the whole party back two weeks before the wedding. Bulk rate applies from three dresses.
If your Westlands wardrobe needs two or three of the alterations above, send us one message on WhatsApp and we will collect everything in a single pickup. One quote, one delivery, one payment on collection. Order tailor near me open now in Westlands Nairobi with free pickup, door delivery and payment on collection today for any alteration and we will collect from your building within 24 hours.
Every price below includes free pickup from your Westlands office, apartment or hotel, free delivery back to the same building, and payment on collection. The quote we give on WhatsApp after seeing your garment photos is the quote you pay. No changes after work starts. If a garment turns out simpler than the guide suggests, we quote lower. If it turns out more complex, we ask before proceeding. Every alteration is done personally by David Ochieng in our Industrial Area workshop, with 14 years of tailoring experience behind every stitch.
Westlands clients send us garments in larger batches than any other Nairobi neighbourhood, because once a pickup is scheduled it makes sense to send everything that needs work. Send two suits, four shirts and three trousers in one pickup and you pay one delivery fee for the whole batch, which is zero because delivery is free. Book experienced tailors in Westlands Nairobi with free home collection and payment on collection today for suits shirts and trousers and we will quote the whole batch in one WhatsApp message.

Westlands clients usually send two to six garments per pickup and get a group rate on delivery, which is always free. The quote we give on WhatsApp is the quote you pay. Our workshop sits in Industrial Area, Nairobi, about fifteen minutes from Westlands by road outside peak hours. But you never need to think about that. For a Westlands collection, a rider arrives at your office reception, your apartment lobby, or the front desk of your building within 24 hours of your WhatsApp message. Every garment is collected on a hanger, never folded into a bag. Every garment is tagged with your name and a job number so nothing gets mixed up when we have multiple Westlands pickups on the same day. We collect from the towers along Waiyaki Way, the buildings on Ring Road Westlands, the serviced apartments around Woodvale Grove, the offices on Peponi Road, the residential blocks on Rhapta Road, the buildings on Muthithi Road, Westlands Road, Mpaka Road and Parklands Road, and every apartment, hotel and workspace in between. Book clothing alterations near me in Westlands Nairobi with free home pickup and M-Pesa on collection for every garment and we will confirm your pickup window on WhatsApp the same day you message.
Standard alterations (trouser hem, shirt sleeve shortening, dress hem, zip replacement, fabric patch) take 3 to 5 working days. Jacket waist take-in, blazer re-lining, dress bodice work, shoulder work and seat adjustments take 4 to 6 working days. Delicate work on silk, chiffon, cashmere and beaded garments takes 5 to 7 working days because those fabrics have to be worked slowly and pressed through muslin or steamed rather than pressed flat. Rush turnaround in 48 hours is available for KSh 500, subject to availability, and it is not available on silk, cashmere or beaded garments. Every pickup slot for Westlands can be arranged before work, during lunch or after 6pm, whichever suits your schedule. Payment is made on collection, so you try the garment on before paying. The neighbourhoods we collect from most often are Westlands, Parklands, Highridge, Spring Valley, Kyuna, Loresho, Kangemi boundary and the entire Ring Road Westlands corridor. We also cover the rest of Nairobi including Kilimani, Karen, Lavington, Runda, Muthaiga, Kileleshwa and Gigiri on the same rider routes. If you work in Westlands but live somewhere else, we can collect from your office and deliver back to your home or vice versa, whichever is easier. Book tailor for alterations near me in Westlands Nairobi with free home pickup and M-Pesa on collection today for any garment and we will collect from the address that works best for you.
Most Westlands clients message us with a vague description like "the jacket looks off" or "the trousers feel baggy". A fit problem is rarely one thing. It is usually two or three connected issues, and fixing only one of them never works. The table below turns what you are seeing and feeling into the exact alteration your garment needs. If your symptom is not listed, send a photo on WhatsApp and we will tell you directly which alteration will actually fix the problem.

Evening pickup availableYes. Serviced apartment collections are one of the services we do most often in Westlands. We collect from the front desk of every major serviced apartment building in Westlands and return the garment to the same front desk. For expat clients who are in Nairobi for a short stay, we can also arrange a same-week turnaround so the alteration is done before the client leaves. Building reception handles the pickup and the delivery, so nothing has to be arranged directly with the apartment tenant. Send the building name, the apartment number and the reception contact on WhatsApp and we will coordinate the pickup with the front desk.
Yes, and this is very common in Westlands. If you bought a suit in London, Milan, Dubai or anywhere else and the fit is wrong when you get back to Nairobi, we can alter it the same way we alter a suit bought in Nairobi. The most common fixes on suits bought abroad are sleeve shortening, waist take-in and trouser hem. Send us photos of the suit on you, front and side, plus a close-up of the fabric and the inside label, and we will tell you within an hour which alterations will fix the fit and what the total will cost. Payment is on collection, so you try the suit on before paying.
A Westlands wardrobe takes more wear than a wardrobe anywhere else in Nairobi. The garments get worn every workday, they sit in cars and on office chairs, they are pressed and dry cleaned more often than casual clothes, and they are usually stored in apartments where hanging space is tight. All of that wears a garment out faster than normal. These are the six habits we teach every Westlands client when they collect an altered garment, and none of them takes more than five minutes.
A suit jacket or blazer should be hung on a wide wooden hanger that supports the full width of the shoulders. On a thin wire or plastic hanger, the weight of a wool jacket pulls the shoulder seams out of shape and the collar starts to stand away from the neck. This is worse in Westlands apartments, where hanging space is tight and jackets get pushed together. A wide wooden hanger costs about KSh 500 and saves the shoulder of a garment worth forty to a hundred times that. Trousers should be hung from the hem on a hanger that grips the cuff. The weight of the leg pulls the crease out overnight, whereas hanging from the waistband pulls the waistband out of shape.
Wool is a living fibre. After a day of wear, the fibres need 24 hours to relax back into shape, the creases fall out, the drape resets and the fabric breathes. If you wear the same suit three days a week, the fabric never gets to reset and the suit starts to look tired within a season. Rotate between two or three suits on workdays. This roughly doubles the working life of each garment. If you only own one suit, hang it in a well-ventilated spot overnight and let it breathe before you wear it again.
A soft clothes brush, run along the shoulders, the lapels, the sleeves and the back of the jacket after every wear, keeps dust and lint out of the wool. Embedded dust dulls the colour and speeds up wear at friction points. Brush downward, following the direction of the nap, not against it. This is the single most important habit for keeping an office suit looking new, and it takes two minutes. On a suit worn twice a week, that is four minutes a week.
Every dry clean strips a little more of the natural lanolin out of the wool, which makes the fibres brittle and shortens the life of the canvas. On an office suit worn twice a week, two dry cleans a year is usually enough. On a blazer worn once a week, one dry clean a year is plenty. Between dry cleans, brush and air the garment on a wide hanger for a few hours. Spot clean obvious marks with a damp cloth and let the garment air dry. Never put a suit in a washing machine and never have it cleaned by a service that uses a hot press directly on the fabric. A hot press on wool creates a permanent shine that never comes out.
Westlands apartments have limited hanging space, and many clients store suits in plastic dry cleaner bags because the bags are free. Do not do this. Plastic traps moisture against the wool, which creates the environment that mildew loves. Mildew on a wool suit shows up as small dark spots that do not come out without damaging the fabric. Use a breathable cotton or canvas garment bag instead. A cotton garment bag costs KSh 1,500 and protects a suit worth thirty to sixty times that. Add a cedar block or lavender sachet to the pocket between seasons to keep moths away.
A loose button on a suit jacket is a KSh 1,500 full-set replacement today. Left for a month, the button comes off and the buttonhole takes the strain, and re-cutting a hand-worked buttonhole is a specialist job. A trouser hem starting to fray is a KSh 1,000 hem re-set today. Left for a season, the hem frays up into the leg and the job becomes a KSh 1,500 rebuild with fabric reinforcement. A zip starting to stick is a KSh 500 slider replacement today. Left alone, the whole zip has to be replaced at KSh 800 or more. The Westlands clients whose wardrobes look sharp after five years are the ones who message us the first time they notice something small. Order repair tailor near me in Westlands Nairobi with free doorstep collection and pay on collection after a proper fit check and we will collect within 24 hours for any small garment issue.
Follow those six habits and your office wardrobe will hold its shape for years rather than months. And when a garment does need work, a sleeve shortened, a lining replaced, a zip swapped, a small patch, we are one WhatsApp message away. See our suit alterations, our darning and invisible mending and our zipper replacement services pages for the three services a Westlands office wardrobe needs most often.
Westlands looks like a single neighbourhood on a Nairobi map. It is not. The tailoring needs of a partner at a law firm on Waiyaki Way are not the tailoring needs of a product manager at a tech company on Ring Road Westlands, and neither of those is the tailoring needs of an expat family living in a serviced apartment on Woodvale Grove. The dress code, the wear pattern, the fabric preference, the turnaround expectations and the budget all change depending on which Westlands you work in, and every one of those changes the way a garment needs to be altered.
Most Nairobi tailors treat Westlands as one market and lose half the brief. They alter every suit jacket the same way regardless of whether the client wears it to court or to a code review, and they alter every dress the same way regardless of whether the client wears it to a client dinner or to a Friday office lunch. That is the mistake we do not make. Over fourteen years we have built a working model of the six Westlands wardrobes that come through our workshop, and every quote we give on WhatsApp reflects which of the six the client is actually in. Here is how we categorise the six Westlands wardrobes, what each one needs, how each one changes the technique, and what each one pays.
The corporate executive works in a Westlands building on Waiyaki Way, Peponi Road or Ring Road Westlands, usually at a director level or above, and wears a suit four to five days a week. The wardrobe is built around four to six suits in navy, charcoal and mid-grey, rotated through the working week so no suit is worn two days in a row. Shirts are white, light blue and pale pink, usually cotton poplin or herringbone, and are worn with a tie two or three times a week and open collared the rest. Trousers are cut from the same cloth as the suit, worn with the jacket, and are usually the standard suit trouser without turn-ups. The dress code is formal but not rigid. The executive wardrobe does not need many alterations, but the ones it does need have to be done to the highest standard, because the garments are expensive and the visible detail matters.
What the executive wardrobe needs is precision. Suit jacket sleeve shortening is the single most common job we do for this wardrobe, and it has to be done with the cuff buttons preserved at the exact original distance from the new cuff edge. Not half a centimetre closer, not half a centimetre further. The executive client notices a button row that is off by half a centimetre, because they wear the same suit four times a week and the details are the details they paid for. Waist take-in on a suit jacket for the executive wardrobe is done from the side seams only, never the front panel, because the front panel carries the lapel roll and the button stance and both of those are fixed by the original maker. Trouser hem is done with a blind stitch that is invisible from the outside, set at the correct break over the specific dress shoes the client wears to work. Every press on an executive wardrobe garment is done through muslin at medium heat, never on a hot iron directly, because a shine on a navy wool suit jacket reads in every meeting room the client walks into.
Turnaround for executive wardrobe work is 3 to 5 working days for standard alterations (sleeve shortening, trouser hem, shirt sleeve work) and 4 to 6 working days for waist take-in or shoulder work. The executive client usually sends us two to four garments at a time and expects the highest standard of finish. The average executive wardrobe commission is between KSh 5,000 and KSh 15,000 per pickup, depending on how many garments are sent and how complex each alteration is. This wardrobe is the reason suit alterations are our number one Westlands service and the reason the suit jacket is the garment we have altered more than any other for Westlands clients in the last five years.
The tech and media wardrobe works in one of the newer office spaces along Ring Road Westlands, Mpaka Road or the Westlands end of Waiyaki Way. The dress code is smart casual, which in Nairobi Westlands means a blazer over a t-shirt or a light shirt, jeans or chinos, and clean sneakers or loafers. Suits are worn for client meetings or pitch days only, and most tech and media professionals own two or three suits that get worn four to six times a year. The blazer, the jean and the chino are the three garments that define this wardrobe, and every one of them has a different alteration pattern from the executive wardrobe.
Blazer work on a tech or media wardrobe is usually done on unstructured or half-canvassed blazers, which gives us more freedom to move the silhouette than a fully canvassed executive jacket. Unstructured blazers are built without the traditional chest canvas, which means the fabric drapes differently and the alteration has to work with the drape rather than reshape it. Blazer sleeve shortening on an unstructured blazer is still KSh 1,800, but the sleeve head is set differently, and the cuff buttons are usually a softer horn or resin rather than the brass you find on a formal blazer. The tech and media wardrobe wears the blazer over a t-shirt two or three times a week, which means the fit has to be correct over a thick cotton t-shirt, not just over a thin dress shirt. When we alter a blazer for a tech or media client, we always ask what garment it will be worn over on most days, and we take the fit measurements over that specific garment.
Jean work on the tech and media wardrobe is done on a chain-stitch machine so the original rope-stitch look survives. Every jean hem we do for a Westlands tech or media client is set with a chain-stitch, not a lock-stitch, because a lock-stitch hem loses the rope-stitch look that this wardrobe notices. Waist take-in on jeans is done with a heavy-gauge needle on a single-needle machine at low tension so the denim is not marked. Chino waist take-ins are done the same way as suit trousers, but the finish is slightly more relaxed because chinos are worn without a jacket and the waist has to sit correctly over a t-shirt or a casual shirt. Turnaround for tech and media wardrobe work is 3 to 5 working days for jean and chino work and 4 to 6 working days for blazer work. This wardrobe is the reason blazer alterations and jean hemming are our number two and number three Westlands services.
The finance and legal wardrobe works in a Westlands building on Waiyaki Way, Parklands Road or the Westlands end of Mpaka Road. The dress code is the most formal of any Westlands sector. Suits are worn every day and are usually built around a three-piece construction with a matching waistcoat. Shirts are the most formal type, often French cuff with cufflinks on client days and barrel cuff on office days. Ties are worn daily by some clients and four days a week by others. The three-piece suit is the defining garment of this wardrobe, and it brings its own set of alterations that do not come up in any other Westlands wardrobe.
The most common alterations for the finance and legal wardrobe are suit jacket waist take-in, three-piece waistcoat adjustment, French cuff shirt work and trouser seat adjustment. French cuff shirts are trickier than barrel cuff shirts because the cuff has to be re-cut without disturbing the fold, and the cufflink holes have to be re-aligned so they still line up after the sleeve is shortened. We do French cuff shirt sleeve shortening at KSh 1,500 rather than the standard KSh 1,200 for barrel cuffs, because the folded cuff takes a completely different technique. Three-piece waistcoats need a specific alteration that preserves the front panel button stance and the back strap height, and on a waistcoat with a hand-canvassed front the alteration has to re-set the canvas so the button stance stays correct. We have a specialist waistcoat service for finance and legal clients that starts at KSh 1,500 and goes up to KSh 3,000 depending on how much of the waistcoat is being adjusted.
Turnaround for finance and legal wardrobe work is 4 to 6 working days for most alterations. The finance and legal client expects a formal, precise finish on every garment, and they notice small details like the position of the cufflink holes, the height of the waistcoat points over the trouser waistband, and the way the tie sits against the collar after the collar is adjusted. Every garment we alter for the finance and legal wardrobe is checked at three points: on a dress form, on the client at the final fitting, and by holding the garment against the light to check for any visible stitch line. Finance and legal clients in Westlands typically send us two to four garments at a time and expect the highest standard of finish. This wardrobe is the reason waistcoat alterations are a regular Westlands service and the reason we keep a dedicated set of waistcoat patterns on file for our regular finance and legal clients.
The hospitality and front of house wardrobe works at one of the Westlands hotels, restaurants, members clubs or serviced office buildings. The dress code is formal and often uniformed. Suits and blazers are worn daily, and the wear pattern is heavy because the wearer is on their feet all day. The most common alterations are blazer waist take-in, trouser hem shortening and shirt collar adjustment, because the uniform shirt collar has to sit correctly for the whole day and the trouser hem has to survive twelve hours of standing. Hospitality uniforms are usually cut in a single size for a team, which means every team member needs alterations to make their own garment fit properly.
Hospitality and front of house garments take more wear than any other Westlands wardrobe. A hotel receptionist standing for ten hours a day wears their blazer through more standing friction in one week than an executive wears a jacket in three months. When we alter a hospitality garment, we always reinforce the points that will fail first: the inner elbow of the blazer, the seat of the trouser, the hem of the trouser, and the shirt collar. Every hospitality alteration includes a reinforcement stitch on these four points at no additional cost, because the reinforcement is what makes the alteration last through a full shift schedule. A blazer that is taken in at the waist for a hotel receptionist and then reinforced at the elbow is a blazer that will hold its fit for the next two years. A blazer that is taken in at the waist without the reinforcement is a blazer that will start to fail at the elbow in eight months.
We handle bulk alterations for hotel and restaurant teams in Westlands on a single pickup, on a schedule that keeps the whole team in uniform at once. A typical bulk commission is a hotel with eight front of house staff, a restaurant with twelve servers, or a members club with twenty staff who all need their uniforms altered before the Christmas season. Turnaround for bulk hospitality work is 4 to 6 working days for the whole team, and rush turnaround is often needed because a hotel cannot put a front of house team member on shift without their uniform. We charge bulk pricing for team orders of five or more garments, which brings the per-garment price down by around twenty percent. This wardrobe is the reason our team alteration service is different from our individual service and the reason we keep dedicated bulk pickup slots open on Monday and Tuesday mornings.
The expat and diplomatic wardrobe lives in one of the serviced apartments or residential blocks in Westlands, often for a posting of two to four years. The wardrobe is usually built in the home country and altered once the client arrives in Nairobi. The most common jobs are suit jacket sleeve shortening on an American or European jacket that has longer sleeves than Nairobi clients usually prefer, trouser hem shortening on trousers cut for a different shoe height, and dress alterations on evening dresses bought before the move. Expat clients often need a same-week turnaround because they are in Nairobi for a short window, and they usually want a single pickup that handles their whole wardrobe in one visit.
Expat clients come from different tailoring traditions, and the alteration has to respect that. An American suit is usually cut with a longer sleeve and a fuller body than a British suit. A British suit is usually cut with a shorter sleeve and a stronger shoulder. An Italian suit is usually cut with a lighter body and a softer shoulder than either. When we alter a suit for an expat client, we ask what country the suit was made in, because the technique has to respect the original cut. We do not turn an American suit into a British suit. We alter it to fit the client's actual body while preserving the character of the suit. That is the standard we hold for every expat client in Westlands.
We coordinate with the front desk of every major serviced apartment building in Westlands, so the expat client never has to leave the building for the pickup or the delivery. Building reception handles the pickup and the delivery, so nothing has to be arranged directly with the apartment tenant, and the client's schedule is not disrupted by a rider arriving at the door at the wrong time. Payment is made on collection, so the client tries the garment on before paying, which is important for a client who has never used a Nairobi tailor before and does not yet know whether the quality of work is what they expect. We have never had an expat client in Westlands refuse delivery after trying on a garment we altered. That is the standard.
The Westlands wedding wardrobe is the most time sensitive of the six. It includes the bride and groom, the bridesmaids, the groomsmen, the parents of the couple, and sometimes the officiant. The wedding is usually in Karen, Runda, Lavington or Limuru, but the preparation happens in Westlands because that is where the couple lives or works. The most common alterations for this wardrobe are bridesmaid dress alterations, wedding dress alterations, suit and waistcoat alterations for the groom and groomsmen, and dress alterations for the mother of the bride or groom. A Westlands wedding wardrobe is usually five to fifteen garments on a single timeline that ends two weeks before the wedding day.
We handle the whole Westlands wedding wardrobe as one project, with one pickup schedule, one quote and one delivery day. The bridesmaid dresses are usually collected from each bridesmaid separately on one day, measured on the same day, and altered with a coordinated hem length across the whole party. The wedding dress is usually collected from the bride once and returned to the bride once, with three fittings scheduled in between. The groom's suit and the groomsmen's suits are usually collected from the couple's home or from the best man's apartment on one day. Every garment in the wedding wardrobe is delivered back to the couple two weeks before the wedding, so the whole party has a full week to try everything on before the day. This wardrobe is the reason bridesmaid dress alterations and bridal and formal wear alterations are two of our most requested Westlands services, and the reason Westlands brides are the single largest group of wedding wardrobe clients we work with in Nairobi.
When we quote a Westlands client, we do not just look at the garment. We look at which of the six Westlands wardrobes the client is in, because that tells us what level of finish the garment needs, what the dress code will allow, and what timeline the client is actually on. A corporate executive does not need the same alteration as a tech professional, even if they are both shortening a suit jacket sleeve. The executive wants a precise, formal finish with the cuff buttons at the exact original distance. The tech professional wants a clean finish that still reads relaxed on a smart casual blazer. Both are suit jacket sleeve shortenings, both cost KSh 1,800, and both take 3 to 5 working days, but the small details of the finish are different, and the small details are what the client notices every time they put the garment on.
The same applies to the dress. A structured work dress for a finance and legal client has a different alteration pattern from an unstructured evening dress for a tech and media client. The work dress needs a bodice that keeps its shape and a hem that sits correctly over a work shoe. The evening dress needs a drape that moves with the body and a hem that sits correctly over a heeled shoe. Both are dress alterations, both cost between KSh 1,500 and KSh 2,500, and both take 3 to 5 working days, but the technique is different because the client is different. That is the Westlands brief in one paragraph, and it is the paragraph that separates a tailor who actually works in Westlands from a tailor who just collects from Westlands.
Westlands clients send us eleven different categories of garment, and each one behaves differently under the needle. Here is the Westlands brief, category by category, with the technique we use, the price we charge, and the turnaround you should expect. This is the deepest part of the Westlands page, and it is the part that tells you exactly what you are paying for. If you only read one section, read this one.
A men's suit for a Westlands client is usually wool, sometimes wool-silk, and occasionally a wool-linen blend for warmer months, in navy, charcoal, mid-grey or black. Suits in Westlands are worn for client meetings, court appearances, interviews, weddings and pitch days, which means the fit has to be correct in three situations: standing, sitting and turning. The most common alterations are sleeve shortening at the cuff end with cuff buttons preserved, waist take-in from the side seams only, and trouser hem with a blind stitch that is invisible from the outside.
Sleeve shortening on a suit jacket is KSh 1,800 and takes 3 to 5 working days. The technique is delicate because the cuff buttons have to come off first, the sleeve has to be shortened from the cuff end, and the buttons have to be re-attached at exactly the same distance from the new cuff edge as they were from the old one. A suit jacket with a button row that is one centimetre off from the original reads wrong on the whole sleeve even if the length is correct. This is the single most common failure we fix on Westlands suits altered by other tailors.
Waist take-in on a suit jacket is from KSh 3,000 and takes 4 to 6 working days. The waist is taken in from the side seams only, never the front panel, because the front panel carries the lapel roll and the button stance and both of those are fixed by the original maker. We preserve the pockets and the lining, and we re-set the lining so the interior looks as clean as the exterior. On a canvassed jacket, the canvas is also re-shaped so the chest line stays correct after the waist is taken in.
Shoulder reduction on a suit jacket is the single highest-skill suit alteration we do and starts at KSh 4,500 with a 4 to 6 working day turnaround. The sleeve head has to be re-set by hand, the sleeve itself has to be re-cut to match the new shoulder width, and on a canvassed jacket the canvas has to be re-shaped so the chest line does not distort. A suit jacket shoulder reduction is a two-person job, one person holding the sleeve head in position while the other stitches it, and it is the alteration that separates a fine tailor from a good one. We do not recommend shoulder reduction lightly and we always tell the client upfront if we think the jacket is better off left alone.
Suit trouser hem is KSh 1,000 for a machine straight hem on a casual suit and KSh 1,200 for a blind stitch hem on a formal suit. The hem is always set over the shoes the client will wear with the suit, because a hem set over the wrong shoe sits at the wrong height and the break reads wrong on every step. Full suit alterations for Westlands clients start at KSh 1,800 for a single sleeve shortening and go up to KSh 4,500 for shoulder reduction. The full suit service is on our suit alterations page.
A blazer for a Westlands client is usually wool, wool-linen, cotton or an unstructured blend, in navy, tan, olive or a seasonal colour. Blazers in Westlands are worn three ways: buttoned at a client lunch, unbuttoned at the office, and over a t-shirt on Fridays. That means the blazer has to fit correctly in three different situations, not just one, and the client has to be comfortable in all three. When we alter a blazer, we check the fit with the jacket buttoned and unbuttoned. If the blazer is going to be worn over a t-shirt on some days and a shirt on other days, we take the fit measurements over the thicker of the two garments, because a blazer that fits over a t-shirt and gapes over a shirt is a blazer that only works half the time.
Blazer sleeve shortening is KSh 1,800 and takes 4 to 6 working days. The sleeve is shortened from the cuff end with the cuff buttons preserved, and the sleeve head is checked to make sure the rotation is still correct after the alteration. Blazer waist take-in is from KSh 3,000 and takes 4 to 6 working days. The waist is taken in from the side seams only, with the lapel roll and the pockets preserved. Blazer re-lining is from KSh 5,500 and takes 5 to 7 working days because the lining has to be drafted and hand-finished into the jacket, and on an unstructured blazer the lining is the only thing holding the shape together, which makes the re-lining work slower. The full blazer service is on our blazer alterations page.
A dress shirt for a Westlands client is usually cotton poplin, cotton twill or Oxford cloth, in white, light blue, pale pink or a fine stripe, with a spread collar or a cutaway collar. The most common alterations are sleeve shortening, waist slimming and body slimming. Sleeve shortening on a dress shirt is KSh 1,200 and takes 3 to 5 working days. Waist slimming on a dress shirt is KSh 1,500 and takes 3 to 5 working days. Body slimming on a dress shirt is from KSh 1,800 and takes 3 to 5 working days. The most common problem with a dress shirt is waist billow under a suit jacket, which we fix with waist and side seam slimming only, keeping the chest and the shoulders untouched. A shirt that is slimmed at the waist only is a shirt that reads tailored under a suit and still fits comfortably when the jacket comes off.
Dress shirts are a high-volume Westlands service because Westlands professionals own more shirts than they own suits, and each shirt gets worn once a week or once every two weeks. A shirt that fits perfectly is a shirt that the client reaches for first, and a client with six shirts that all fit perfectly is a client who never has a bad shirt day. That is the reason we recommend a full shirt drawer clean-out once a year for Westlands clients: bring us the whole drawer in one pickup, we alter what needs altering and tell you straight which shirts are not worth altering at all.
A trouser for a Westlands client is usually wool for a suit trouser, cotton or cotton-linen for a chino, or a technical fabric for a golf or travel trouser. The most common alterations are hem shortening, waist take-in and seat adjustment. Hem shortening is KSh 1,000 for a machine straight hem, KSh 1,200 for a turn-up (cuff) hem, and KSh 1,200 for a blind stitch hem on a suit trouser. Waist take-in is KSh 1,500. Seat adjustment is KSh 1,500. Turnaround is 3 to 5 working days for all of these.
Trousers in Westlands take more wear than any other garment in the wardrobe because they are worn every day and they take the friction of the office chair. When we alter a Westlands client's trousers, we always check the seat first. A trouser that fits well at the waist but bags at the seat is a trouser with a seat problem, not a waist problem, and fixing the waist alone never solves it. The seat is where the back rise has to be re-cut and the seat seam re-set, with the back pockets re-set on the original line. A proper seat adjustment is what makes a trouser look expensive on the client. A trouser with a baggy seat looks like it does not fit even when the waist is perfect.
A dress for a Westlands client is usually structured crepe or wool for a work dress, silk or satin for an evening dress, or chiffon over satin for a formal dress. The most common alterations are hem shortening, waist take-in and bodice adjustment. Hem shortening on a structured fabric is KSh 1,500 and takes 3 to 5 working days. Hem shortening on chiffon or silk is from KSh 2,500 and takes 4 to 6 working days because the hem is rolled by hand. Waist take-in is KSh 2,500. Bodice adjustment is from KSh 2,500. Turnaround for structured fabric work is 3 to 5 working days. Turnaround for silk and chiffon work is 4 to 6 working days.
Dresses in Westlands are worn for client dinners, weekend parties, wedding season and work. Every dress we alter is checked against the client's actual posture, because a dress that fits standing still does not always fit sitting down at a client dinner. We ask the client to send a photo of themselves seated as well as standing, and we check the fit in both positions. That is the sort of detail a Westlands client notices, because they are in the dress for three to five hours at a time and they want to be comfortable, not just correct.
A structured jacket for a Westlands client is usually wool, wool-blend or a heavier crepe, in navy, black, grey or a seasonal colour. Structured jackets are worn over a work dress or a blouse, and they are the female equivalent of a men's suit jacket. The most common alterations are sleeve shortening, waist take-in and shoulder adjustment. Sleeve shortening on a structured jacket is KSh 1,800 and takes 4 to 6 working days. Waist take-in is from KSh 3,000 and takes 4 to 6 working days. Shoulder adjustment is from KSh 4,000 and takes 4 to 6 working days.
Structured jackets are more like men's blazers than like women's dresses because the jacket has a canvas front and a shoulder structure that has to be preserved. When we alter a structured jacket for a Westlands client, we work the alteration from the inside out, preserving the canvas and the shoulder shape, and we check the fit buttoned and unbuttoned just like we would for a men's blazer. The most common failure we fix on Westlands structured jackets altered by other tailors is a waist take-in that has flattened the lapel roll, which reads wrong on the whole jacket even if the waist fits perfectly.
Jeans for a Westlands client are usually selvedge or a good quality denim, worn on casual Fridays or on weekends. The most common alterations are hem shortening with the chain-stitch preserved, waist take-in and leg slimming. Hem shortening with chain-stitch preserved is KSh 1,200 and takes 3 to 5 working days. Waist take-in on jeans is KSh 1,500 and takes 3 to 5 working days. Leg slimming on jeans is KSh 1,500 and takes 3 to 5 working days. Jeans are delicate to alter because the denim is heavy and every stitch is visible. We use a heavy-gauge needle on a single-needle machine at low tension so the denim is not marked. The chain-stitch hem is done on a chain-stitch machine, not a lock-stitch machine, because a lock-stitch hem loses the rope-stitch look that jeans customers notice from across the room.
Westlands tech and media clients are the single largest group of jean alteration clients we have. They notice the chain-stitch, they notice the needle marks, and they notice the seam density. A jean hem that is done wrong reads as a jean hem that was done wrong. A jean hem that is done correctly is a jean hem that the client forgets was ever altered. That is the standard we hold on every jean we alter for a Westlands client.
Bridesmaid dresses for a Westlands bride are usually chiffon, satin, silk or a beaded construction. The most common alterations are hem shortening, bodice take-in, strap adjustment and beaded hem work. Hem shortening on a simple fabric is KSh 1,500 and takes 3 to 5 working days. Bodice take-in is KSh 2,500 and takes 4 to 6 working days. Strap adjustment is KSh 1,500 and takes 3 to 5 working days. Beaded hem work is from KSh 4,000 because every bead is removed and re-attached by hand, and it takes 5 to 7 working days. Rush service is not available on beaded dresses because beads cannot be rushed.
Westlands wedding parties are usually four to eight bridesmaids spread across the city, so we coordinate the whole party on a single pickup and delivery schedule. Bulk rate applies from three dresses, fifteen percent off per dress from three dresses and twenty percent off from six dresses. The full process is on our bridesmaid dress alterations page.
A wedding dress for a Westlands bride is the most careful alteration we do. The dress is often a designer gown in silk, silk chiffon, lace overlay or beaded silk, and the alteration has to preserve every detail. We do three fittings: a basted fitting where the dress is stitched with long loose stitches, a forward fitting where the dress is in its final shape with the finishing still to be done, and a final fitting. Hem shortening starts at KSh 3,500 depending on the fabric and the amount of lace or beading. Turnaround is 5 to 7 working days for a full gown, though the fitting schedule runs across four to six weeks. Westlands brides usually book us six weeks before the wedding to leave room for a final adjustment, and we book the first fitting within 24 hours of the pickup.
Outerwear for a Westlands client is usually a trenchcoat, overcoat, leather jacket or a technical storm coat. The most common alterations are hem shortening, sleeve shortening with button preservation, body slimming and lining replacement. Hem shortening on a coat is from KSh 3,500 and takes 4 to 6 working days. Sleeve shortening with buttons preserved is KSh 3,000 and takes 4 to 6 working days. Body slimming is KSh 4,500 and takes 4 to 6 working days. Lining replacement is from KSh 5,500 and takes 5 to 7 working days. Outerwear in Westlands is worn less often than outerwear in colder cities, but the garments are often expensive and the alterations matter more. See our overcoat alterations page for the full outerwear service.
Small repairs are a high-frequency Westlands service. A broken zip on a pair of trousers, a torn pocket on a jacket, a pulled seam on a shirt, a small hole on a wool coat, a broken strap on a bag. The most common repairs are trouser zip replacement at KSh 800, jean zip replacement at KSh 900, jacket zip replacement from KSh 1,200, small fabric patches from KSh 600, and bag zip replacement from KSh 1,000. Turnaround is 3 to 5 working days. Small repairs often ride along in the same pickup as a larger alteration, which is why the Westlands batch model works so well for our clients. Every zip we fit is tested closed, at the bend and open-reclose before the garment leaves the bench, because a zip that passes only the closed test is a zip that will come back within six months.
Every category above has a fixed price and a fixed turnaround. If your garment falls into one of these categories, you already know what the alteration will cost before you send us a WhatsApp message. If your garment is unusual, we quote it based on the photos and the fabric. Either way, the price we give on WhatsApp is the price you pay. No surprises, no adjustments after the fact, no post-work negotiation. That is the standard we hold on every Westlands alteration we do.
Tailoring in Westlands runs on a calendar. The pattern of what Westlands clients send us changes through the year in ways that a tailor who does not work in Westlands would never guess. Here is what we see month by month, how the seasons affect our turnaround, and how to plan your own alterations so you are never caught out by a busy week. This is the calendar section we use to plan our own workshop capacity, and it is the same calendar we give every Westlands client when they ask when the best time to book an alteration is.
January is our busiest month for Westlands suits and blazers. Clients come back from the December holidays, put on their work clothes, and realise something does not fit. Either the client has gained weight over the holidays, or the client has been meaning to get an old suit altered for months and the new year is the trigger. January and February are the two months of the year when we do the most waist take-ins, the most seat adjustments and the most sleeve shortenings on suits. This is also when we get the most batches: a client sends us three suits and five shirts in one pickup after deciding that the whole work wardrobe needs a reset. A full new year reset for a Westlands professional typically includes two to four suit jackets, four to six shirts, three to five pairs of trousers and one or two pairs of jeans. Turnaround in January and February is usually 4 to 6 working days rather than the usual 3 to 5, because the volume is higher. If you need a suit altered for a specific January or February event, book the pickup at least two weeks before the event date.
April to June is the Nairobi wedding season and the long rains. Both affect Westlands tailoring in different ways. Bridesmaid dress alterations spike in April and May because wedding season in Nairobi is heaviest between May and August, and brides start the coordination work six weeks before the wedding. Wedding dress alterations also spike, because the bride usually books her fittings during the rainy months for a dry-season wedding. At the same time, the long rains mean Westlands clients are wearing outerwear and closed shoes rather than open shoes, so we do more coat alterations, boot zip replacements and trouser work than usual. If you are getting married in the second half of the year and you live or work in Westlands, April is the month to start the bridesmaid dress process. See our bridal and formal wear alterations page for the full wedding season timeline.
July to September is Nairobi's cool season. Westlands clients switch to heavier suits, wear blazers more often, and pull out the coats and jackets that have been in the wardrobe for eight months. The most common alterations in July to September are coat and overcoat alterations, blazer waist take-ins, and heavier trouser work. This is also the season where we see the most fabric patch work, because the previous season's wear has finally caught up with the garments. A shirt that has been worn twice a week for a year suddenly needs a collar repair. A jacket that has been worn every Friday for two years suddenly needs a small patch on the elbow. A trouser that has been worn every day for eighteen months suddenly needs a seat reinforcement. If you are planning to have a coat or overcoat altered for July, June is the month to book, because coat work takes 4 to 6 working days and the seasonal volume starts to build from mid-June.
October to December is Westlands's most formal quarter. Westlands hosts more end-of-year functions, client dinners, award nights and holiday parties than any other Nairobi neighbourhood, and every one of those events has a dress code. The most common alterations in October to December are evening dress work, tuxedo and dinner jacket alterations, waistcoat adjustments for men attending black-tie events, and shirt work for the party season. This is also the season where we do the most rush alterations, because a client who has been invited to an event with two weeks' notice suddenly needs a dress or a suit fitted in forty-eight hours. If you have a December event and you live or work in Westlands, October is the month to start the alterations, and November is the deadline month. Rush service is available throughout the season for KSh 500, subject to availability, but it fills up faster in the last two weeks of December than at any other time of year.
The Westlands tailoring calendar does not change our prices. It changes our timeline. A suit sleeve shortening in March takes 3 to 5 working days. The same sleeve shortening in the third week of December can take 4 to 6 working days, because the seasonal volume is higher and the workshop is running at full capacity. The rush service is still available throughout the year, but during the peak weeks in December and January it fills up faster. The rule we give every Westlands client is simple: if your alteration is tied to a specific event, book the pickup two weeks earlier than you think you need to. That buffer covers the seasonal volume, any adjustment at the final fitting, and any small re-do that needs doing. A Westlands professional who plans the wardrobe around the calendar never has to worry about a garment being late.
A client who plans a full wardrobe reset in January gets a lower effective price per garment because the whole batch is collected in one pickup and delivered in one delivery, and delivery is free anyway. A client who sends one garment at a time in the middle of a busy season pays the same per garment but waits longer because the workshop is at capacity. The Westlands clients who spend the least on tailoring over five years are the ones who batch their alterations, book ahead of their events, and fix small problems before they become large ones. That is the same principle that runs through our fabric patching services, our re-lining services, and every other repair we do for a Westlands client.
Beyond individual clients, we run a corporate team service for Westlands offices. If you manage a team of five to thirty professionals who need garment alterations on a regular basis, we can set up a standing pickup schedule for your office. We come to your Westlands building on an agreed day every month, collect everything that needs altering, and deliver it back the same week. The team accounts for their own garments, and your office pays for the alterations in one monthly invoice with payment on collection for the final batch. This service is common in law firms, consultancies, banks, hotel front desks and corporate offices along Waiyaki Way and Peponi Road. Send us a message on WhatsApp with the size of your team and the type of garments you need altered and we will set up a trial schedule for the next month.
January: send the whole work wardrobe for a reset. February and March: catch up on outerwear and coat work before the cool season. April: start the wedding season process if you have a wedding in the second half of the year. May and June: finish the wedding season work and get the coats ready for July. July and August: reinforce the wardrobe for the cool season, patch the small failures before they grow. September: get the outerwear work done before the end of the year events begin. October: start the end-of-year alterations, especially evening dresses and tuxedos. November: finish the end-of-year alterations, book the rush slots if you need them. December: batch any last-minute alterations for the December party season and get the January wardrobe ready while the workshop is quiet. That is the Westlands professional's tailoring year, in one paragraph, and it is the calendar we plan our own capacity around.
Rush service is available all year for KSh 500 and turns around in 48 hours, subject to availability. The rush service is not available on cashmere, silk, beaded or hand-finished garments, because those fabrics need to rest for 24 hours after the press before the garment is stable. During January, February, the third week of December and the two weeks before any major Nairobi holiday, the rush service fills up faster than at other times of the year. If you need a rush alteration during a peak week, book the pickup the day you send the WhatsApp message, because the rush slots are first come first served. Send us a message at least 72 hours before you actually need the garment back, so we have room to schedule the rush work around the standard queue.
In fourteen years of tailoring, I have altered about six thousand garments for clients who live or work in Westlands. That is more than any other Nairobi neighbourhood I work with, including Kilimani, Karen and Lavington. Westlands is not just the busiest tailoring neighbourhood in Nairobi. It is the neighbourhood with the highest concentration of high-value garments, the highest concentration of professional dress codes, and the highest concentration of clients who notice when a fit is not quite right. A garment that I alter for a Westlands client is going to be worn in front of colleagues, clients, partners, board members and strangers on the street, and every one of those people will notice if the fit is off.
That is why I do eight checks on every Westlands garment before I pick up a needle. Here is what those eight checks are, why each one matters, and what happens when a tailor skips it.
The first check is the fabric. I need to know what the garment is made of, because everything else follows from the fabric. A wool suit is worked differently from a wool-linen blazer. A cotton poplin dress shirt is worked differently from an Oxford cloth shirt. A structured crepe dress is worked differently from a silk chiffon dress. A cashmere overcoat is worked differently from a technical storm coat. When a Westlands client sends us a garment, we always ask for a close-up photo of the fabric and a photo of the inside label, because those two photos tell me the fibre, the weight and the manufacturer, and those three things decide the needle, the tension, the thread and the press. If the client cannot tell me the fabric, I will identify it myself at the pickup before the rider leaves the building. Nothing is cut until I know what I am working with. When a tailor skips the fabric check, the result is a garment that has been altered with the wrong needle and the wrong tension, and the client notices six months later when the fabric starts to pucker along the seam.
The second check is the garment construction. A fused jacket is worked differently from a half-canvassed jacket, and a half-canvassed jacket is worked differently from a fully canvassed jacket. A three-piece suit is worked differently from a two-piece suit, and a waistcoat has to be treated as its own garment even when it comes in as part of a set. A blazer with a partial lining has different internal structure from a blazer with a full lining. A dress with boning in the bodice is worked differently from a dress with a soft bodice. When I check the construction, I am looking at how the garment was made, because that tells me what the alteration can and cannot do without changing the way the garment behaves. A fused jacket cannot be slimmed as aggressively as a canvassed one. A dress with boning cannot be taken in at the waist without adjusting the boning to match. Those are the constraints, and I would rather tell a Westlands client upfront what is possible than deliver a garment that has lost the structure it was built with. When a tailor skips the construction check, the result is a jacket that has lost its chest shape or a dress that has lost its bodice structure, and both of those failures are permanent.
The third check is the posture of the client. This is the check most Nairobi tailors skip, and it is the check that matters most in a professional wardrobe. A client who works at a desk eight hours a day does not stand the same way as a client who is on their feet. A client who drives long distances sits differently from a client who takes the matatu. A client who presents in front of a room stands differently from a client who spends the day at a screen. When a Westlands client sends us a garment for alteration, I ask for two photos of the client wearing the garment: one standing normally, one seated. I do not ask them to stand up straight. I ask them to stand the way they actually stand, because the garment has to fit the actual body, not the idealised one. That is the difference between a jacket that fits on a dress form and a jacket that fits on the client every day of the year. When a tailor skips the posture check, the result is a garment that looks right in the workshop mirror and slightly wrong every time the client wears it out.
The fourth check is the shoes. This matters more for Westlands clients than for clients anywhere else in Nairobi, because the Westlands wardrobe is built around a specific dress shoe. A trouser hem that sits correctly over a leather Oxford sits wrong over a chunky boot. A dress hem that breaks correctly over a heeled shoe drags over a flat shoe. A suit trouser break that reads correctly with a formal loafer reads too long with a sneaker. When we alter a Westlands garment that involves the hem, I always ask the client to send a photo of the shoes they will wear with the garment. For a suit, it is the dress shoes the client wears to client meetings. For a dress, it is the shoes the client will wear to the event. For an overcoat, it is the shoes the client wears on the coldest morning of the year. If the client does not have the shoes at the pickup, we hold the garment until we have the photo, because a hem set without the shoes is a hem set wrong. When a tailor skips the shoe check, the result is a hem that looks correct on the bench and slightly wrong on the street, and the client notices it every time they put the garment on.
The fifth check is the wear pattern on the garment. Westlands garments take more wear than garments in any other neighbourhood. A suit worn four times a week in a Westlands office has different wear than a suit worn once a week in another part of the city. The areas that wear first on a Westlands wardrobe are the seat of the trouser, the elbows of the jacket, the inner thigh of the trouser, the collar of the shirt, and the cuff of the dress. When I check a Westlands garment, I look at those five points before I make any alteration. If a point is starting to thin, I reinforce it while I am doing the main alteration. If a point has already failed, I patch it as part of the same job. The clients who get the most out of their Westlands wardrobes are the ones who let us handle the small reinforcement work at the same time as the alteration, because doing both in one visit costs a fraction of doing them separately. When a tailor skips the wear check, the result is a garment that fails at a point that was already weak, and the client comes back for a repair that could have been prevented.
The sixth check is the deadline. This is the Westlands check that matters most, because Westlands clients are the busiest clients I work with. A Westlands professional does not have a free afternoon to pick up a garment twice. They have their calendar, their meetings, their travel and their events, and the alteration has to fit into the gaps. When a Westlands client sends us a garment, I always ask when they need it back. If the answer is "whenever", I do the work on our standard timeline. If the answer is "before Thursday", I look at the schedule and tell the client straight whether Thursday is realistic or whether they need to book the rush service. I would rather tell a client "we cannot hit Thursday" and have them use a different tailor for the week than take the job and deliver a garment that is rushed and slightly off. That is the promise I make to every Westlands client. When a tailor skips the deadline check, the result is a rushed alteration that has been done at the wrong speed, and the client notices the rushed finish on the first wear.
The seventh check is the pairing. A Westlands professional rarely sends one garment. They send a suit and three shirts, or a blazer and two pairs of trousers, or a dress and a jacket, or a full wedding party wardrobe. When we alter more than one garment for the same client, we check the pairing between them. A jacket that has been shortened at the sleeve has to still work with the shirts the client wears under it, which means the cuff opening has to show the correct amount of shirt cuff on each shirt. A dress that has been altered at the waist has to still work with the jacket the client wears over it, which means the waist of the dress has to sit at the same height as the waist of the jacket. A trouser that has been hemmed has to still work with the shoes the client wears with the suit, which means the break has to read correctly on each shoe. Every one of those pairing checks happens before the garment leaves the bench, and every one of them is invisible to the client until the day they put the whole outfit on and everything fits together. When a tailor skips the pairing check, the result is a wardrobe that fits in pieces but does not fit in combination.
The eighth check is the client's reaction at the final fitting. A garment can pass every technical check on the bench and still not look right on the client, because the client knows their own body better than any tailor can. When we deliver a Westlands garment, the rider waits two or three minutes while the client tries the garment on in front of a mirror. If the client says "this feels right", we are done. If the client says "this feels slightly off" and the feeling is not something they can pinpoint, we do not argue. We take the garment back, we put it on a dress form, we look at it again, and we figure out what is different. Nine times out of ten it is something small, a half centimetre on a sleeve length, a millimetre on a hem line, a stitch tension that reads slightly tighter on one side than the other. The tenth time it is something real, and the fix is worth doing. Either way, the client does not pay until they are happy, and the client never has to explain why. That is the last check, and it is the one that turns a good alteration into a garment the client wears every week for the next five years.
Those eight checks take about twenty minutes to complete, whether the client sends us one garment or ten. They are the reason we can quote accurately over WhatsApp before the rider arrives, and they are the reason the alterations we deliver for Westlands clients hold for years rather than months. If you are a Westlands client and you want a tailor who actually understands what a Westlands wardrobe goes through, send us a message with the photos and the deadline and we will start the eight checks the moment your first WhatsApp arrives. Payment is on collection. We collect from your office or your apartment. We deliver back on a hanger. You try the garment on before you pay.
A Westlands client who has never used a home pickup tailoring service usually has the same set of questions. How does the pickup work? Who do I hand the garment to? What if the reception desk does not accept parcels? How do I pay? What if the fit is not right? Here is the entire Westlands service model, step by step, from the moment you send the first WhatsApp message to the moment the garment is back in your wardrobe, hanging correctly. This is the same process we have walked through about six thousand times in Westlands, and it is the process we will walk through with you if you decide to work with us.
It starts with a message to +254 705 728 896. You do not need to fill in a form. You do not need to book through a website. You send a WhatsApp message with four things: what you want altered, a photo of the garment, a photo of you wearing the garment if the fit is the issue, and the address of the Westlands building we should collect from. If you are not sure what alteration you need, describe the problem in plain words. "The suit jacket sleeves are too long" or "the dress does not fit at the waist". I do not need tailoring vocabulary to understand what is wrong. The first reply from us usually comes within thirty minutes during working hours. If you send the message at 9pm, we will reply the next morning at 8am. Every message goes to me personally, not to a chatbot or a receptionist.
Once we have your photos and your description, we send back a firm price. The price is based on the fabric, the construction, the alteration you need and the turnaround you want. If the alteration is a standard one from our price guide, the price is exactly what is on the guide. If the alteration is unusual, we quote it based on what we actually see in the photos. The quote is written on WhatsApp, and that written quote is what you pay. We do not change the price after the garment reaches the workshop unless you approve a change in writing first. If you are sending multiple garments in one pickup, we quote the whole batch in one message. If you want to know the exact turnaround for a specific event, tell us the event date in your first message and we will confirm the delivery window before you commit.
Once you have confirmed the quote and the pickup window, a rider arrives at your Westlands building. If you work in an office, we collect from your floor reception or the ground floor security desk, whichever your building prefers. If you live in an apartment, we collect from your building lobby or the front desk. Every garment is collected on a hanger, never folded into a bag. Every garment is tagged with your name and a job number. You do not need to be present for the pickup if your reception can hand over the garment. When the rider arrives at the workshop, we send you a WhatsApp message confirming which garments we received and any note we have from the inspection. If the garment has a small stain, a pulled thread or a missing button that we noticed at the pickup, we tell you the same evening so there is no question later about what state the garment was in when it arrived.
Once your garments are at the workshop, the alteration is done by me personally. Every garment is checked against the eight checks I described above, then cut, stitched and pressed. Standard alterations take 3 to 5 working days. Complex alterations take 4 to 6 working days. Delicate fabric work takes 5 to 7 working days. If at any point during the alteration I find something the photos did not show, I message you on WhatsApp with a note and a revised quote before I continue. That is how we avoid surprises. If the revision is not something you approve, the garment comes back unaltered and there is no charge. That is the same guarantee we have held for fourteen years, and we have never had a client refuse to pay for a revision they approved because they knew exactly what they were getting.
On the delivery day, the same rider who collected the garment brings it back to the same Westlands building. Every garment is delivered on a padded hanger, in a breathable garment bag, pressed and ready to wear. The rider arrives at the same reception or lobby that the pickup happened at. If you are not at the building when the rider arrives, the reception holds the garment for you. If you would rather have the delivery go to a different address, such as your home in Kilimani, your weekend address in Naivasha, or your partner's office, tell us at the quote stage and we will deliver to the address that works for you. If you are travelling and will not be back in Nairobi for a few days, we can hold the garment at the workshop and deliver it when you are back. There is no storage fee for a reasonable holding period.
When the rider hands you the garment, you take a moment to try it on. The rider will wait for two or three minutes while you check the fit in front of a mirror. If you are happy with the fit, you pay via M-Pesa, cash or bank transfer. If you are not happy with the fit, you do not pay. The rider takes the garment back to the workshop, we adjust it free of charge, and the rider returns it within forty-eight hours. That is our fit guarantee, and it applies to every alteration at every price. If the fit is correct but you have changed your mind about a detail, we tell you upfront what the cost of the change is before we do it. If the change is not possible, we tell you straight. Nobody pays for a fit that does not fit.
Two weeks after the delivery, we send you a short WhatsApp message asking whether the garment is still fitting correctly. This is not a marketing follow-up. It is a real check. If the garment has shifted slightly, which can happen on a garment that has not been worn before, we offer a free adjustment within the first thirty days. If the garment is fine, we leave you alone until you have another alteration. The clients who use us repeatedly are the ones who appreciate that we do not chase them with sales messages. We only message when there is something to say about the garment.
Most Westlands clients who use us once use us again. The pattern we see most often is a client who sends one garment in the first month, three garments in the second month, and then a full wardrobe reset twice a year after that. By the third commission, we have a file on the client that includes their measurements, the alterations we have done, the fabrics they prefer and any notes about the shoes they wear with each suit. That file is what allows us to alter the fourth garment and the fifth garment with a single WhatsApp message, because we already know what works for the client. This is the Westlands standing relationship model, and it is the model that makes home pickup tailoring worthwhile both for the client and for us.
The whole process, from the first WhatsApp to the garment back in your wardrobe, usually takes five to seven days for a standard alteration and two to three weeks for a complex one. In that time, you have not left your Westlands building once. You have not sat in a tailor's shop. You have not had to find parking on a busy Westlands street. You have not had to leave work early to make a fitting. You have sent one WhatsApp message, received one quote, handed a garment to a receptionist, and received the fitted garment back at the same desk. That is the Westlands service model, and it is the reason we work with more Westlands clients than any other neighbourhood in Nairobi.
A Westlands professional's time is worth more than the cost of an alteration. The three hours it takes to visit a tailor's shop, wait for a fitting, and come back two days later is worth more than the KSh 1,800 you would save by using a cheaper service. The Westlands clients who get the best value from tailoring are the ones who treat the service as a time trade, not a money trade. They batch their garments, they plan their alterations around their calendar, and they let the rider handle the pickup and the delivery. Over a year, that saves them thirty to fifty hours of Nairobi traffic and parking. That is the actual value of a home pickup tailoring service in Westlands, and it is the value we deliver.
Two things make the Westlands model work. The first is trust. Every Westlands client who hands a garment to a rider is handing a garment worth KSh 5,000 to KSh 60,000 to someone they have never met, and every one of them is trusting that the garment will come back correctly altered and correctly pressed. We take that trust seriously. Every garment is tagged, every step is confirmed on WhatsApp, and every delivery is followed up. The second is consistency. Every alteration we do for a Westlands client is done by the same tailor, to the same standard, with the same eight checks. That consistency is what makes a Westlands wardrobe look like a Westlands wardrobe over five years rather than a random collection of garments that happen to fit.
Eighteen questions, straight answers. Every one of these has come from a real Westlands client conversation over the last fourteen years, either over WhatsApp, at a pickup, or at a delivery day where a client asked the question they had been holding back. If yours is not here, message us on WhatsApp and we will answer it the same day. We do not collect testimonials systematically. These are the ones that stayed with me, the Westlands clients who came back months later to tell me the suit or the dress was still fitting correctly, and the ones who sent a friend or a colleague the same week they collected their own garment.
I work on Waiyaki Way and I had four suits that were all slightly off: two needed the sleeves shortened, one needed the waist taken in, and one needed the trouser hem. I did not have a single free afternoon to take them to a tailor, so I had been putting it off for months. A colleague mentioned David's service and I sent a WhatsApp message one Tuesday morning. He replied within thirty minutes with a group quote, a rider came to my floor reception that afternoon, and all four suits came back the following Monday on padded hangers. Total was about KSh 11,000 for the whole batch. Every suit fits correctly now and I wear them all in rotation. The whole thing happened without me leaving the building once. That is the whole point of a Westlands tailor, and David gets it.
I live in a serviced apartment on Woodvale Grove and I had two evening dresses that needed altering for a client dinner season. I did not want to travel to a shop and I did not want to hand a delicate dress to someone I did not know. David collected from my building's front desk, sent me a WhatsApp confirmation the same evening, and delivered the dresses back within five days. Both dresses fit correctly and the fabric was not marked anywhere. The front desk handled everything and I never had to leave the apartment. Perfect for my schedule.
I bought a suit in London last summer and the sleeves were too long for me and the waist was too generous. I was nervous about having it altered in Nairobi because I did not want the character of the suit changed. David asked which country the suit was made in, explained that he would alter it to fit me while preserving the British cut, and quoted KSh 4,800 for the sleeve shortening and the waist take-in together. The suit came back in five days and it fits perfectly. He did not turn it into an Italian suit or a Nairobi suit. It is still the suit I bought, only now it fits me. That is the standard I was looking for.
My company has twelve front of house staff and every one of them needed their uniforms altered before the Christmas season. David set up a standing pickup on a Monday morning, collected everything in one go, and delivered the whole team's uniforms back on the Friday of that week. He charged bulk pricing, which brought the per-garment price down by around twenty percent, and he reinforced the inner elbows and the seat seams on every jacket and trouser at no extra cost. Twelve staff, one pickup, one delivery, all done in one week. If you manage a team in Westlands, this is the service to use.
I had a pair of selvedge jeans that I had owned for four years. I had been putting off getting them hemmed because I was worried about losing the chain-stitch. When I searched for a jean hem service near me in Westlands, David came up. He explained he would use a chain-stitch machine so the rope-stitch look survived, and he charged KSh 1,200. When the jeans came back, the hem looked exactly the way it had from the factory. You cannot tell the jeans were hemmed. That is what I paid for, and that is what I got.
That is all it takes to start. Send a message on WhatsApp with four things: what you want altered, a photo of the garment, a photo of you wearing the garment if the fit is the issue, and the address of the Westlands building we should collect from. If you are sending multiple garments, send one photo per garment and we will quote the whole batch in one message. Tell us which Westlands building you are in and when you need the garments back. We will reply with a firm price and a pickup window during working hours. Free collection from your Westlands office, apartment or hotel. Altered in Industrial Area by David personally. Delivered back to the same reception or lobby, on a padded hanger, in a breathable garment bag. You try the garment on before paying, and payment is on collection via M-Pesa, cash or bank transfer. If anything is not right at delivery, do not pay, and we will re-collect and adjust free of charge.
