Bridesmaid dress alterations · Industrial Area, Nairobi

Bridesmaid dress alterations in Nairobi, where eight women in the same colour still need eight different alterations.

"A bridesmaid dress is the hardest alteration in womenswear. The dress is often a delicate fabric, the fit has to read identical from ten metres across a church aisle, and every bridesmaid has a different body that the dress was not cut for. I have handled wedding parties of four to eight bridesmaids in Nairobi, and the only way to do it right is to measure each bridesmaid separately, alter each dress individually, and coordinate the final fit so the row still reads as one line."

Book bridesmaid dress alterations with free door to door pickup in Nairobi Kenya today and we will collect each dress from the bride, the maid of honour, or each bridesmaid separately, whichever works for the group. Hem shortening and lengthening, bodice take-in and let-out, strap adjustment, waist re-set, zip replacement, lining work, bead and lace preservation, and full wedding party sizing across four to eight bridesmaids. Every dress handled personally by David Ochieng in our Industrial Area workshop, with 14 years of tailoring behind every stitch.

Order coordinated bridesmaid dress alterations with free home pickup and M-Pesa on collection Nairobi and we will quote the whole wedding party as one job, give you a single pickup date, and deliver all the dresses back together two weeks before the wedding date. If you are a bride searching for a tailor who can handle a full bridesmaid group without turning any dress into a compromise, or you simply need one bridesmaid dress hemmed and taken in with free pickup across every Nairobi estate today, we can help. The hardest alteration in womenswear

Why a bridesmaid dress alteration is harder than any other dress job, and why most Nairobi tailors quietly avoid wedding parties

A single bridesmaid dress is a delicate alteration. A wedding party of six bridesmaid dresses is a coordination problem that most tailors turn down. The dresses are often ordered from a designer or a bridal shop in the same size or the closest size available, which means every dress needs work, every dress needs to look identical from the front of the church, and every bridesmaid has a different body that the original pattern was not cut for. Add in a deadline that cannot move because the wedding day does not move, and you understand why most Nairobi tailors say no. Here is what we actually check when a bridesmaid dress, or six of them, land on the bench.

The dress has to fit the bridesmaid, and still match the row

The hardest part of a bridesmaid dress alteration is not the fit. It is the coordination. If six bridesmaids wear the same dress in the same colour, they have to read as one continuous line from the front of the church. That means the hem length has to be identical across all six dresses, measured from the same point, on six women who are different heights. It means the bodice has to be taken in at the waist on each dress without changing the shape of the neckline, because the neckline is what reads on camera. It means the straps sit at the same height on six different shoulder shapes. Every one of those details is measured against the group, not just against the individual. Book bridesmaid dress alterations with free door to door pickup in Nairobi Kenya today and we will coordinate the whole party, not just each dress on its own.

Bridal fabrics are the most delicate we work with

Bridesmaid dresses are cut from chiffon, satin, crepe, tulle, silk, georgette, lace overlay and chiffon-lined satin, sometimes all in the same dress. Every one of those fabrics behaves differently under the needle. Chiffon slips. Satin shows every pin mark. Crepe stretches in one direction and not the other. Tulle tears if the needle is too thick. Lace overlay has to be lifted and re-anchored after any cut underneath, because cutting through lace destroys the pattern. Silk shows every needle mark and cannot be pressed with a hot iron at any point. Every bridesmaid dress we alter is worked at low tension with fine needles and pressed through muslin or steamed. On silk and chiffon, we also rest the dress for 24 hours before the final check, because those fabrics move when they relax. Schedule bridesmaid dress fitting with free pickup across all Nairobi estates today and we will quote each fabric on its own terms.

Beadwork, lace and appliqué have to be preserved

Many bridesmaid dresses have beaded straps, beaded necklines, lace overlay, appliqué panels or embroidered bodices. Any alteration that touches one of those areas has to preserve the beading or the lace exactly as it was. Cutting through a beaded bodice means removing the beads first, re-cutting the fabric underneath, then re-attaching every bead by hand at the original spacing. Cutting through lace overlay means lifting the lace off the lining, altering the lining, then re-anchoring the lace so the pattern still reads continuous. This is slow, careful work, and it is the reason a bridesmaid dress alteration on a beaded silk gown can cost three times what the same alteration costs on a plain crepe dress. We always tell the client upfront which parts of the dress are delicate and why the price reflects that. Order urgent bridesmaid dress alterations with free 24 hour collection and door delivery in Nairobi Kenya and we will match the technique to the fabric and the trim, every time.

The deadline cannot move, and that changes everything

A wedding day is the only deadline in tailoring that never moves. That means the timeline matters more than the price. A bridesmaid dress that takes four days is not a problem. Six bridesmaid dresses that need to be finished, checked, and returned together two weeks before the wedding is a planning problem. We recommend starting the bridesmaid dress alterations at least six weeks before the wedding date. That gives us time to collect each dress, measure each bridesmaid, do the alterations, do a final fitting on each dress, and adjust anything that is off before the wedding week. If the wedding is closer than six weeks, we can still take the job but we tell the bride upfront what the realistic timeline is, and we do not take on a wedding party we cannot finish. A late bridesmaid dress is worse than no bridesmaid dress. Book urgent bridesmaid dress alterations with free 24 hour collection and pay on collection Nairobi and we will confirm the wedding date on WhatsApp before we start.

Every bridesmaid has a different body, and every dress has to be altered differently

Wedding parties are almost never made up of women with the same body type. One bridesmaid is taller, one is shorter, one has a longer torso, one has a fuller bust, one has wider shoulders, one has a smaller waist. The dresses come in the same size or the closest size available, which means each dress fits one bridesmaid well and the rest need work. We measure every bridesmaid separately, on the body, in the shoes she will wear on the wedding day. We take eight to twelve measurements per bridesmaid depending on the dress. We then cut each dress to its own pattern. The goal is that when the row stands at the altar, no single dress stands out. That is the standard, and it is the reason we do not quote a wedding party over WhatsApp without seeing the actual dresses and the actual bridesmaids. Hire a bridesmaid dress alteration specialist in Nairobi with free pickup and fit guarantee and we will collect every dress, measure every bridesmaid, and deliver the whole party two weeks before the wedding.

Why this matters to the bride and to the bridesmaids

A bridesmaid dress that fits one bridesmaid and does not fit another is the single most common wedding photography problem we hear about after the wedding. It shows in every group photo. It shows in the aisle photos. It shows in the getting-ready photos. The bridesmaids notice it, the bride notices it, and there is nothing that can be done about it on the day. The brides who plan ahead, who start the alterations six weeks out, and who let us coordinate the whole party are the ones whose photos look like the weddings in magazines. That is the same standard we hold on bridal and formal wear alterations, on waistcoat alterations for groomsmen, and on bespoke tailoring for the groom. Hire best bridesmaid dress alteration tailor in Nairobi with free home collection and pay on collection and we will coordinate the whole wedding party the way it should be coordinated.

Not every bridesmaid dress is the same job

Three bridesmaid dress tiers, three completely different alterations

A KSh 5,000 market bridesmaid dress and a KSh 45,000 designer silk gown look similar in a photo but are not the same garment. One is a simple two-layer polyester dress with a machine-stitched hem and no beading. The other is a hand-finished silk dress with a lace overlay, beaded straps, and a bodice built on a hidden corset. Treating them the same way is how a good dress gets ruined. Here is how we categorise bridesmaid dresses before deciding which technique to use.

Everyday tier

Polyester, market and budget bridesmaid dresses

Mass-produced bridesmaid dresses from market stalls, budget retail, and fast-fashion wedding shops. Fabric weight 150 to 250 gsm, usually polyester satin, polyester chiffon or a polyester-crepe blend. Simple two-layer construction, machine-stitched hem, factory-closed bodice, and no beading, lace or appliqué. Common in Nairobi retail between KSh 3,000 and KSh 10,000.

What we do differentlyOn these we work pragmatically because the goal is to make the dress fit, not to restore a construction that was never there. Standard machine stitch on the plain seams, medium heat press through a muslin cloth, and a quick fit check on the bridesmaid. Where a hem shortening on a KSh 5,000 dress costs more than a third of the dress, we tell the bride upfront so she can decide whether it is worth it. Get your bridesmaid dress altered today with free pickup and same week delivery in Nairobi and we will quote the whole party in one message.

Mid tier

Better retail, satin, crepe and chiffon bridesmaid dresses

Bridesmaid dresses from better retail and mid-tier bridal shops. Fabric weight 200 to 300 gsm, in satin, crepe, chiffon, or a chiffon-over-satin combination. Full lining, proper bodice construction with boning or a fitted inner corselette, and often a lace overlay on the bodice or straps. Common in Nairobi retail between KSh 10,000 and KSh 30,000.

What we do differentlyOn this tier we treat the dress like what it is, a garment worth altering carefully. The hem is measured on the bridesmaid in the wedding shoes, the bodice is taken in from the side seams only, and the lining is re-set so it sits the correct distance above the outer hem. We press through two layers of muslin at medium heat on satin and crepe, and we steam chiffon rather than pressing it flat because chiffon loses its movement under a direct press. See our re-lining services for the same discipline applied to dress lining replacement. Order bridesmaid dress alteration with free pickup Nairobi and we will coordinate the whole party in one collection.

Premium tier

Designer, silk and beaded bridesmaid gowns

Bridesmaid dresses from designers such as Jenny Yoo, Amsale, Dessy, BHLDN, Revolve bridal, and high-end bridal shops. Fabric weight 250 to 400 gsm, in pure silk, silk crepe, silk chiffon over silk lining, and often with hand-beaded bodices, lace overlay panels, appliqué, or hand-finished silk straps. Frequently above KSh 40,000 per dress. Sometimes the fabric is a limited-run or custom-dyed batch that cannot be sourced again.

What we do differentlyOn this tier every alteration is done by hand where the original was hand-finished. Beads are removed before any cut and re-attached by hand at the original spacing. Lace overlay is lifted off the lining, the lining is altered, and the lace is re-anchored so the pattern reads continuous. Silk is worked at low tension with fine needles and steamed rather than pressed. The dress is rested for 24 hours after the alteration before the final check. If the dress is a designer model with a proprietary closure or a specific beaded strap that cannot be sourced again, we tell the bride upfront and quote the closest match rather than risk the dress. Call David Ochieng now for premium bridesmaid dress alterations with free pickup and delivery Nairobi Kenya and we will open a priority slot for the whole wedding party.

If you are not sure which tier your bridesmaid dresses fall into, send a close-up photo of the fabric, the bodice and the inside lining for one dress on WhatsApp. We will tell you from the construction how the alteration should be handled for the whole party.

For wedding parties we recommend booking six weeks before the wedding date, because coordinating hem length across four to eight dresses takes time and every bridesmaid needs a final fit check before the wedding week. Free pickup, every estate, every bridesmaid

You do not bring the bridesmaid dresses to Industrial Area. We come to you, and we come to every bridesmaid.

Our workshop sits in Industrial Area, Nairobi, central and easy for a rider to reach from any direction. But the way we work with wedding parties is different from how we work with a single garment. For a single bridesmaid dress, we collect from the bride or from the bridesmaid herself. For a whole wedding party, we collect from each bridesmaid separately, at her home or her office, on a single day, on a schedule that we agree with the maid of honour ahead of time. Every dress is collected on a hanger, never folded into a bag, because folding chiffon or satin destroys the drape. Order bridesmaid dress alterations with free home pickup across all Nairobi estates today and we will book one collection window for the whole party on a single day.

Standard bridesmaid dress alterations (hem shortening on simple fabrics, strap adjustment, bodice take-in on a plain dress, invisible zip replacement, lining patch) take 3 to 5 working days. Bodice work on a fitted or boned bodice, waist re-set, back closure conversion, corset back re-lacing, lining replacement and lace overlay re-anchoring take 4 to 6 working days. Silk hemming, beaded hem work, beaded strap replacement and beadwork re-attachment take 5 to 7 working days, because beads are removed and re-attached by hand and silk is steamed rather than pressed. For a wedding party we recommend starting six weeks before the wedding date so that every bridesmaid can have a final fit check before the wedding week. Rush turnaround in 48 hours is available for KSh 500, subject to availability, and it is not available on beaded or silk gowns. Free collection and delivery, every time, anywhere in the city, for one dress or eight. Payment is made on collection, so the bride or the bridesmaid tries the dress on before paying. The estates we collect from most often for wedding parties are Runda, Kilimani, Westlands, Karen, Lavington, Parklands, Kileleshwa, Gigiri, Muthaiga and Upper Hill. We also cover the whole Eastlands side, and go as far south-east as Syokimau, Mlolongo and Kitengela. If you are a bride in any of those estates and you have four to eight bridesmaids spread across the city, we can collect from every one of them on the same day. Book bridesmaid dress fitting with free doorstep pickup and M-Pesa on collection Nairobi and we will confirm the collection schedule with the maid of honour before the pickup day.

If a bridesmaid lives outside Nairobi, we can arrange a courier drop-off to the workshop and a courier return, but the free pickup and delivery service covers Nairobi only. If the wedding party is split between Nairobi and another town, the bride can collect all the dresses and send them to us in one box. Message us on WhatsApp and we will work out the fastest arrangement for your specific group.

Find your problem, find your fix

What is wrong with the bridesmaid dress? Look it up.

Most brides message us with a vague description like "the dress feels tight around the waist" or "the straps keep slipping". A bridesmaid dress fit issue is rarely one thing. It is usually two or three connected issues, and fixing only one of them never works. The table below turns what you are seeing and feeling into the exact alteration your dress needs. If your symptom is not listed, send a photo on WhatsApp and we will tell you directly which alteration will actually fix the problem.

Nina bridesmaids sita kwa harusi. Mnaweza kurekebisha nguo zote kwa wakati mmoja?

Ndio.

Sleeves za dress ni too long. Can you shorten without ruining the chiffon?

Yes. Chiffon hem shortening in Nairobi starts at KSh 2,500.

The bridesmaid dresses came from a designer but one is a size too small. Can you let it out?

Sometimes. Letting out a bridesmaid dress only works if the dress has seam allowance at the side seams or the centre back. Most designer bridesmaid dresses have one to two centimetres of allowance, which allows a let-out of about two to three centimetres total. If the dress needs more than that, the options are to add a matching fabric panel at the back, to replace the entire back panel, or to accept the size. We tell the bride upfront which is realistic for her specific dress. Designer dress let-out starts at KSh 3,000. Send a photo of the inside of the dress at the side seam and one of the back zip area, and we will tell you within the hour whether the let-out is possible.

Zip ya dress imekwama. Can you replace the invisible zip without a visible seam?

Yes. Invisible zip replacement Nairobi is KSh 2,000. Tunatoa zip ya zamani, tunafungua seam, tunafunga zip mpya, kisha tunashinda seam tena kwa thread yenye colour sawa. Kwa invisible zip, seam imeshindwa mpaka teeth zinapotea kabisa kwenye seam. Kazi inachukua siku tatu hadi tano. Kama dress ina silk au chiffon nyembamba, tunaweka thread nyembamba na tuna-check mara tatu kama zip inaonekana nje ya seam. Tuma picha ya zip na moja ya inside ya dress.

Bridesmaids wangu wana urefu tofauti. Mnaweza kuhakikisha hems zote zinafanana?

Ndio.

One of my bridesmaids is pregnant. Can you alter her dress now and again after the baby?

Yes, and this happens more often than you would think. When a bridesmaid is pregnant we work on a two-stage plan. First we alter the dress to fit her at the current size, adding a discreet panel at the side seam or the front of the bodice that gives the dress room to grow. Then, closer to the wedding day, we do a second fitting and adjust the panel to her size at that point. The first alteration is priced normally. The second adjustment is charged at a reduced rate because it is a re-adjustment of the same panel rather than a full re-cut. Both stages are done by the same tailor so the seam matches. Tell us the wedding date and the bridesmaid due date on WhatsApp and we will plan the two-stage timeline with you.

Dress ni silk na mimi ni nervous kuhusu needles marks. Can you alter without leaving any?

Yes, and silk work is the most careful job we do on bridesmaid dresses. Silk alteration Nairobi inaanzia KSh 3,000 kwa hem shortening. Tunatumia needle nyembamba kabisa, tuna-work at low tension, na hatupress silk kwa iron direct kwa sababu silk inaonyesha kila needle mark na kila shine. Tunasteam silk tu.

Can you alter the bridesmaid dresses without seeing the bridesmaids in person?

No, and we do not recommend any tailor who says yes to that. A bridesmaid dress that is altered without measuring the actual bridesmaid on the actual body will fit wrong every time. We need to measure each bridesmaid in person, in the wedding shoes, standing normally. The measurement visit is free and takes about fifteen minutes per bridesmaid. For a group of six bridesmaids that is about ninety minutes total, and we can do all six in one visit if they are in the same place, or collect from each home separately. Send us the group details and we will arrange the measurement visit.

What if a bridesmaid cannot make the final fitting?

That happens, and it is one of the reasons we recommend starting the alterations six weeks before the wedding. If a bridesmaid cannot make the final fitting because she is travelling or has a work commitment, we can do a video fitting with her, guided by the maid of honour, and adjust based on that. The video fitting is not as good as an in-person fitting, but on a dress that has already been fitted once, it is usually enough. If the bridesmaid is in Nairobi but busy, we can send the finished dress by rider to her home for a try-on, wait for her feedback, and pick it up again the same day if anything needs adjusting. Both options are free. Tell us upfront on WhatsApp which bridesmaids might not make the final fitting and we will plan around them.

Keep the bridesmaid dress perfect from delivery to the wedding aisle

Eight habits that keep an altered bridesmaid dress looking new until the wedding day and beyond

A bridesmaid dress has a short but intense life. It is altered two to six weeks before a wedding, worn once for a full day of standing, sitting, dancing, hugging and photographs, and then either kept as a memory or worn to another formal occasion. The gap between delivery and the wedding day is where most dresses pick up their problems: a crease that sets overnight, a bead that comes loose, a hem that catches on a chair. Every habit below is something we teach every bridesmaid when she collects her dress, and none of them takes more than five minutes.

1. Hang on a padded or shaped hanger, never wire

A bridesmaid dress should be hung on a padded or shaped hanger that supports the shoulder line. On a thin wire hanger, the weight of the skirt pulls the shoulder seams out of shape and the bodice slowly distorts. This is worse on a beaded or lined dress because the weight is greater. A padded hanger costs about KSh 500 and protects a dress that cost ten to forty times that. When we deliver an altered bridesmaid dress, we bring it on a proper hanger, and we ask the bridesmaid to transfer it to her own padded hanger before she does anything else. Never hang a bridesmaid dress over the back of a chair, on a doorknob, or on a radiator. The weight of the skirt will pull the whole dress out of shape within a week.

2. Store in a breathable garment bag, never plastic

Between delivery and the wedding day, a bridesmaid dress should be stored in a cotton or canvas garment bag, never plastic. Plastic traps moisture against the fabric, which creates the environment mildew loves, and mildew on satin, chiffon or silk shows up as small dark spots that cannot be removed without damaging the fabric. A cotton garment bag costs KSh 1,500 and protects a dress worth twenty to forty times that. For long-term storage after the wedding, add a cedar block or lavender sachet to each pocket of the bag. On a beaded dress, use a garment bag with a padded shoulder so the beads do not press into the fabric of the bag.

3. Steam the dress, never press it directly

The single biggest mistake a bridesmaid can make between delivery and the wedding is pressing the dress at home with a hot iron. A hot iron flattens the fabric, shines the surface, and on satin or silk leaves a permanent mark. If the dress needs refreshing before the wedding, use a steamer held six to eight inches away from the fabric. Steam lifts the surface wrinkles without touching the weave. If you must press, use a clean cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric at low to medium heat, and never press beaded, lace-covered or silk areas. On chiffon, never press at all, only steam, because chiffon loses its natural movement under a direct press and the hem will go stiff.

4. Do not try the dress on with self-tanner, perfume or deodorant on

Satin, chiffon and silk absorb anything they touch. Self-tanner, perfume and deodorant spray leave invisible marks on the dress that become visible under the strong lights at the wedding. If a bridesmaid tries the dress on between delivery and the wedding, she should do it with clean skin, no perfume, and no deodorant. Apply perfume and deodorant after the dress is on, and let them dry completely before the ceremony. The same rule applies on the wedding day itself. This is the single most common cause of visible marks on bridesmaid dresses we hear about after the wedding.

5. Check the beadwork and lace weekly between delivery and the wedding

On a beaded or lace-covered bridesmaid dress, run your hand gently along the beaded areas and the lace edges once a week between delivery and the wedding. If a bead is starting to come loose, we can re-stitch it in a five-minute visit before the wedding. If a lace edge is starting to lift, we can re-anchor it in the same visit. Do not pull on a loose bead or thread. Just note where it is and message us on WhatsApp. A five-minute re-stitch today prevents a bead falling off on the wedding day, and on a dress with a beaded hem a single bead falling on a smooth floor is a slip risk for the bride.

6. Carry a small bridesmaid emergency kit in your handbag

Every bridesmaid should carry a small emergency kit in her handbag on the wedding day. The kit should include: a small sewing needle threaded with the same colour as the dress, a safety pin in the same colour, a spare invisible zip slider, a small clear nail varnish for stopping a run in chiffon or tights, and a stain remover pen in a matched colour. This is not about expecting the dress to fail. It is about knowing that if a bead comes off, a strap pulls, or a small mark appears, the bridesmaid can handle it in thirty seconds without anyone knowing. Most of the small dress emergencies we hear about are a KSh 200 fix in the moment and a KSh 2,000 repair after the wedding.

7. Loosen any adjustments before sitting and dancing

If a bridesmaid dress has a corset back, a laced panel or a tight waist seam, loosen the lacing slightly before sitting for a long dinner, and before dancing. Sitting in a tightly laced bridesmaid dress stresses the waist seam more than standing, and on a dress that has been taken in at the waist, that stress is the most common cause of a seam failing during the reception. Loosening by half a centimetre is enough. Re-tighten after the meal if the look matters for the photographs, and loosen again before dancing. Small adjustment, big difference to how the dress holds on the day.

8. Fix small issues before they grow

A loose bead is a KSh 500 re-stitch today. Left for two weeks, the bead comes off entirely and the thread pulls, and the job becomes a KSh 3,000 strap or hem re-bead. A strap that has slipped a millimetre is a KSh 1,500 adjustment today. Left alone, the strap stretches and starts to show, and the job becomes a KSh 3,000 strap replacement. A small mark from perfume or deodorant is a KSh 2,000 spot-clean today. Left for a week, the mark sets and the job becomes a KSh 5,500 lining replacement on the affected panel. The bridesmaids who spend the least on their dresses after the wedding are the ones who message us the moment they notice something small between delivery and the wedding. Get instant quote for bridesmaid dress repair with free pickup and pay on collection Nairobi and we will come to your home within 24 hours for any small dress issue, whether it is a bead, a strap, a seam or a mark.

Extra habit, dress preservation after the wedding

One more habit that is not about the wedding day itself but about the years after. If the bridesmaid intends to wear the dress again, or if the bride wants to preserve it as a memory, have the dress professionally dry cleaned and re-pressed within two weeks of the wedding. Wine, sweat and food stains set over time, and a dress that is cleaned within two weeks will come back like new. A dress that is left hanging for six months will have permanent marks. After cleaning, store the dress in a breathable garment bag with a cedar block. If the dress is being preserved as a memory, use acid-free tissue paper at the folds. That is the routine that keeps a bridesmaid dress wearable for years to come.

Follow those eight habits and the bridesmaid dress will look perfect from the moment it is delivered to the moment the last photograph is taken. And when a dress does need a small fix between delivery and the wedding, a bead, a strap, a seam, a mark, we are one WhatsApp message away. See our bridal and formal wear alterations, our zipper replacement services, and our re-lining services pages for the three services a bridesmaid dress needs most often across its life.

The cloth decides the technique

Every bridesmaid dress fabric behaves differently under the needle, and the alteration changes with the fabric

Most tailoring advice treats bridesmaid dresses as one category of garment. They are not. A polyester satin bridesmaid dress and a silk chiffon bridesmaid dress with a lace overlay are not the same job, even when they are cut to the same pattern. The needle, the tension, the press, the thread, the amount of hand-finishing, and even the way we collect and deliver the dress change with the cloth. Here is how we handle every bridesmaid dress fabric we work with, and why each one needs a different approach. If you are searching for a bridesmaid dress alteration service near me now open, this is what the work actually looks like at the bench.

Polyester satin bridesmaid dresses, the everyday standard

Polyester satin is the fabric most budget and mid-tier bridesmaid dresses are cut from. It is a smooth, tightly woven fabric with a distinct sheen on one side and a matte finish on the other. It takes a press well at medium heat through a muslin cloth, and it behaves predictably under a standard needle. The two things we watch on polyester satin are pin marks, because satin holds a pin mark longer than almost any other fabric, and sheen, because a hot iron on the shiny side creates a permanent bright patch. Every polyester satin bridesmaid dress we alter is pinned with silk pins rather than standard pins, and pressed through muslin at medium heat with the iron on the matte side only. Hem shortening on polyester satin starts at KSh 1,500. Bodice take-in starts at KSh 2,500. The same technique we use on this fabric carries into our bridal and formal wear alterations work.

Chiffon bridesmaid dresses, the fabric that slips

Chiffon is the fabric that gives bridesmaid dresses their movement, and it is also the fabric that slips the most under the needle. Chiffon is a lightweight, plain-weave fabric, usually in polyester, silk or a blend, and it is almost always cut as an overlay over a lining. The hem of a chiffon dress is not cut and machine-stitched, because a machine stitch stiffens the hem and destroys the movement. Chiffon hems are rolled by hand, a technique called a rolled hem, where the edge is folded over twice at about two millimetres and stitched by hand with a fine needle. This is slow work and it is why chiffon hem shortening starts at KSh 2,500 rather than KSh 1,500. On a chiffon dress with a beaded hem, the beads are removed first, the hem is rolled by hand, and the beads are re-attached at the same spacing on the new hem line. If you need a chiffon bridesmaid dress hem shortened near me now open, this is the technique you are paying for.

Silk and silk crepe bridesmaid dresses, the most delicate cloth in the workshop

Silk is the most delicate cloth we work with on bridesmaid dresses. It is a natural protein fibre with a smooth hand and a natural sheen that no synthetic fabric can replicate. The two things silk hates are needle marks and heat. A standard needle leaves a visible hole in silk that does not close, and a standard iron leaves a permanent shine or a burn. Every silk bridesmaid dress we alter is worked at low tension with the finest needles we stock, and the dress is steamed rather than pressed. Silk hems are hand-rolled and hand-finished, and every seam that was hand-finished at the factory is re-set by hand. Silk crepe behaves slightly differently from silk satin, because crepe has a matte finish and a slightly pebbled surface, and crepe stretches more in the cross direction than in the length direction, which means the pattern has to account for direction when we cut. Silk bridesmaid dress hem shortening starts at KSh 3,000.

Crepe and georgette bridesmaid dresses, structured with movement

Crepe and georgette are mid-weight fabrics that sit between satin and chiffon in both weight and behaviour. Crepe has a slightly matte surface and a firm hand, and it drapes with a structured fall that reads formal on camera. Georgette is lighter than crepe, more fluid, and often used for the skirt or the sleeves of a bridesmaid dress while the bodice is cut from a heavier fabric. Both take a standard needle and a muslin press at medium heat. Both have a grain direction that matters when we cut, because cutting georgette across the grain changes the drape of the panel. Crepe and georgette hem shortening starts at KSh 2,000. Bodice work on crepe starts at KSh 3,000.

Tulle bridesmaid dresses, the fabric that tears

Tulle is the netting fabric used in bridesmaid skirts, underskirts, sleeves and overlays. It is lightweight, transparent, and structurally delicate. Tulle tears if the needle is too thick or the tension is too high, and it does not self-heal, which means a wrong stitch leaves a permanent hole. Every tulle panel we alter is worked with a fine ballpoint needle at low tension, and every torn point is reinforced before any alteration begins. On bridesmaid dresses with a tulle skirt over a satin or crepe base, the alteration is often done on the base fabric only, and the tulle is adjusted separately by hand. Tulle alterations start at KSh 2,500 depending on the amount of tulle involved. On a full tulle ballgown bridesmaid dress, the alteration can take 4 to 6 working days because every tulle layer has to be re-set after the base fabric is altered.

Lace overlay bridesmaid dresses, where pattern preservation is everything

Lace overlay is one of the most common bridesmaid dress constructions, where a lace panel is laid over a lining fabric and stitched around the edges. The lace itself has a specific pattern, and any alteration to the dress has to preserve that pattern exactly. When we alter a lace overlay bridesmaid dress, we lift the lace off the lining by hand along the edge of the alteration, do the alteration on the lining, and then re-anchor the lace back onto the lining so the pattern reads continuous from the outside. We never cut through lace, because cutting the lace destroys the pattern and the pattern cannot be restored. Lace overlay re-anchoring starts at KSh 4,000 and takes 4 to 6 working days depending on how much of the lace has to be lifted. If your bridesmaid dress has a lace overlay and it needs to be taken in at the waist, this is the reason the price is what it is.

Beaded bridesmaid dresses, where every bead is a small project

Beaded bridesmaid dresses are the slowest alteration work we do. Every bead is a small project. When a dress has beadwork on the bodice, the straps or the hem, the beads have to be removed before any cut is made, because cutting through the beaded fabric breaks the thread that holds the beads and they fall off in the wash or in the car on the way to the wedding. Beads are removed one at a time, placed in a tray, cut the fabric underneath, do the alteration, then re-attach every bead by hand at the original spacing and in the original order. On a full beaded bodice, this can take four to five hours of hand work for a single alteration. Beaded bridesmaid dress alterations start at KSh 4,500 and take 5 to 7 working days. Rush service is not available on beaded work because beads cannot be rushed. If you need a beaded bridesmaid dress alteration near me now open, the timeline matters more than the price.

Chiffon over satin bridesmaid dresses, two fabrics, one alteration

The chiffon over satin construction is the most common bridesmaid dress combination and the one that requires the most careful coordination. The chiffon overlay and the satin lining behave completely differently under the needle, and any alteration has to keep both layers in step. When we shorten the hem on a chiffon over satin dress, we cut the satin lining first to the correct length, anchor the satin hem, then cut the chiffon overlay to sit two to four millimetres longer than the satin so the chiffon drapes freely. We then roll the chiffon hem by hand. On a bodice alteration of a chiffon over satin dress, the chiffon overlay is lifted off the satin, the satin bodice is altered, and the chiffon is re-set over the new bodice so the drape reads correctly. Chiffon over satin dress alteration starts at KSh 2,500.

Mixed fabric bridesmaid dresses, when the bodice and the skirt are not the same cloth

Many bridesmaid dresses are cut from two or three different fabrics at once. The bodice might be silk, the skirt might be chiffon, and the straps might be beaded tulle. Each of those fabrics behaves differently, and the alteration of one affects the fit of the others. When we alter a mixed-fabric bridesmaid dress, we work from the inside out, starting with the inner layer and finishing with the outer layer, checking the drape of the outer layer at each stage. On a three-layer dress, the alteration can take 5 to 7 working days because each layer has to be finished before the next is re-set. Mixed fabric bridesmaid dress alteration starts at KSh 3,500. If you are not sure what your dress is made of, send a close-up photo of the fabric at the bodice, the fabric at the hem, and the inside label, and we will identify each one for you before quoting.

Why the fabric tier matters to your wallet

A KSh 1,500 hem shortening on a polyester satin bridesmaid dress is straightforward work. The same KSh 1,500 on a chiffon bridesmaid dress is slower work because the hem is rolled by hand, and on a silk dress it is slower still because the cloth has to be steamed rather than pressed. On a beaded hem, the same hem shortening costs KSh 4,000 and takes 5 to 7 working days because every bead has to come off and go back on by hand. The clients who get the most out of bridesmaid dress alterations are the ones who tell us the fabric upfront and send us a close-up of the cloth and the inside label. That way we can tell the bride the exact price, the exact turnaround, and the exact technique before a single stitch is made. That is the same standard we hold on re-lining services and on waistcoat alterations for groomsmen.

How we coordinate a whole wedding party

From first WhatsApp to final delivery, how a wedding party of four to eight bridesmaids actually gets altered

Coordinating a whole bridesmaid party is a completely different job from altering one dress. It is a sequence of seven steps spread across five to six weeks, and every step has to be planned before the previous step finishes. Most brides have never been through a wedding party alteration, so here is exactly what happens, in order, with what you will be asked at each stage. If you are searching for a bridesmaid dress alteration service near me now open, this is the process you should expect from a tailor who actually coordinates the party rather than just altering each dress on its own.

Step one, the WhatsApp consultation with the bride and the maid of honour

It starts on WhatsApp. The bride, or the maid of honour on the bride's behalf, sends us a message with the wedding date, the number of bridesmaids, the dress brand and style, and one photo of the dress. We reply with a short set of questions. How many bridesmaids, is it four, six or eight. Have the dresses already arrived or are they still in transit. What is the deadline for the wedding. Are there any bridesmaids who cannot make measurements in person because they live outside Nairobi. Is any bridesmaid pregnant. Are the dresses a specific designer model with a proprietary construction. Are there beaded, lace or silk elements that we need to know about. The consultation is free and it usually takes about fifteen minutes over WhatsApp. By the end of it, we know whether the timeline is realistic and we can give an accurate ballpark price for the whole party. If the wedding is closer than six weeks and there are beaded dresses involved, we tell the bride upfront that the timeline is tight and we discuss the options. Book bridesmaid dress alteration near me now open with free WhatsApp advice and same day quote Nairobi and we will start the consultation as soon as you send the first message.

Step two, the group measurement visit

Once the bride has confirmed the commission, we book a group measurement visit. The visit happens at a single location, usually the bride's home or a location the bridesmaids already know, and every bridesmaid attends in the shoes she will wear on the wedding day. The visit takes about fifteen minutes per bridesmaid, so a party of six takes about ninety minutes total. We take eight to twelve measurements per bridesmaid depending on the dress construction. For a fitted bodice dress we measure the bust, the under-bust, the natural waist, the low waist, the hip, the shoulder width, the shoulder slope on each side, the bodice length from shoulder to waist, the skirt length from waist to floor, and the strap length on each side. Every measurement is taken on the body, standing normally, in the wedding shoes. We do not measure on a hanger, and we do not ask the bridesmaids to send measurements themselves. Schedule bridesmaid dress measurement visit with free home pickup across all Nairobi estates today and we will book one visit for the whole party, or visit each bridesmaid separately if the group cannot gather in one place.

Step three, the dress collection day

On the agreed collection day, a rider visits each bridesmaid's home or office and collects her dress. Every dress is collected on a padded hanger, never folded into a bag, because folding chiffon, satin or tulle destroys the drape and leaves creases that do not come out. The rider photographs each dress on arrival so we have a record of its original condition, and the same rider travels from bridesmaid to bridesmaid so that the whole party arrives at the workshop on the same day. For parties of four to eight, this can take three to five hours on a single day. By the end of the collection day, every dress is at the workshop, every dress has been inspected, and we send the bride a WhatsApp message confirming which dresses we received and any notes about the state of each dress. If a dress arrives with a stain, a pulled thread, or a bead missing, we photograph it and message the bride the same evening, so there is no question later about what state the dress was in when it arrived. Order bridesmaid dress pickup near me now open with free doorstep collection and M-Pesa on collection Nairobi and we will arrange the collection day around the group schedule.

Step four, the pattern and cut phase

Once every dress is at the workshop, we draft a pattern for each dress based on the measurements of the specific bridesmaid who will wear it. Every bridesmaid gets her own pattern even though the dresses are the same model, because the fit is what matters and the fit is different for every body. We cut the hem to a coordinated finished length, which means the hem length is chosen once for the whole party and every dress is cut to that same length even though each bridesmaid is a different height. We cut the bodice, the waist and the straps to each bridesmaid's own pattern. This phase takes two to three working days for the whole party, and it is the phase where most of the careful work happens. If any dress needs to be let out rather than taken in, this is the phase where we check whether the seam allowance allows it. Order coordinated bridesmaid dress alterations near me now open with free home pickup and pay on collection Nairobi and we will give the whole party a single delivery window before the cut phase starts.

Step five, the group fitting day

When the dresses are stitched but not yet finished, we book a group fitting day. This is the equivalent of the basted fitting in bespoke tailoring, and it is the most important day of the whole process. Every bridesmaid tries her dress on at the same time, in the wedding shoes, and we adjust what is needed on the spot. We check the hem length against the group, we check the bodice fit for each bridesmaid, we check the straps at the correct height on every shoulder, and we check the waist seam at the correct position on every torso. The group fitting is where we catch anything that looked correct on the bench but reads wrong when the dresses are worn by the actual bridesmaids. It is also where the bride sees the whole row together for the first time and can approve the final look. The group fitting day takes about two to three hours for a party of six, and it happens about two weeks after the collection day. Book bridesmaid dress group fitting near me now open with free WhatsApp coordination and M-Pesa on collection Nairobi and we will schedule the group fitting day around the bridesmaids' availability.

Step six, finishing and final checks

After the group fitting, the dresses go back to the bench for finishing. Every seam that was pinned at the fitting is stitched, every bead that was removed is re-attached, every lace panel that was lifted is re-anchored, and every dress is pressed or steamed depending on the fabric. This phase takes three to four working days for the whole party, because every alteration done at the group fitting has to be closed cleanly and every dress has to be checked against its own pattern before the next dress is finished. We do not rush this phase. A bridesmaid dress that is finished in a hurry will show a subtle puckered seam or a slightly uneven hem, and on a wedding day that reads on every photograph. This is also where we do the final quality check, holding each dress against the light to check for pinholes, loose beads, uneven hems, and any mark that needs to be addressed. Hire best bridesmaid dress alteration specialist near me now open with free pickup and pay on collection Nairobi and we will send the bride a written quality check on every dress before delivery.

Step seven, group delivery day

On the delivery day, the same rider who collected the dresses visits each bridesmaid and returns her dress, pressed, on a padded hanger, in a breathable garment bag. The rider waits while the bridesmaid tries the dress on in front of her own mirror, and confirms the fit. If anything is wrong, the rider takes the dress back to the workshop the same day, we adjust it, and the rider returns it within 48 hours at no extra charge. The delivery day usually happens about two weeks before the wedding, which leaves room for a final adjustment if anything changes. Payment is made on collection at the delivery stage, so each bridesmaid or the bride tries the dress on before paying. Book bridesmaid dress alteration and delivery near me now open with free home delivery and pay on collection Nairobi and we will deliver the whole party on a single day two weeks before the wedding.

Why we do not alter bridesmaid dresses without coordinating the party

A single bridesmaid dress that is altered on its own will fit that bridesmaid but may not match the group. When six bridesmaid dresses are altered separately by six different tailors, the hems end up at six slightly different lengths, the bodices at six slightly different fits, and the row reads as six individual dresses rather than one coordinated line. On a wedding day, that difference shows in every group photograph. The whole point of coordinating the party is that the dresses still read as a single unit even though each one is fitted to a specific bridesmaid. That is the standard we hold for every wedding party we take on, and it is the reason most brides who find us come back for their own daughters' weddings years later.

A short note from the bench

The five things that decide whether a bridesmaid dress alteration will read on the wedding photographs

In fourteen years of tailoring I have altered about eight hundred bridesmaid dresses. Some of them were part of small parties of four. Some were part of large parties of eight or ten. Every one of those dresses has one thing in common with every other dress in its party. The wedding day does not move. That is the difference between bridesmaid dress alterations and every other type of tailoring work. You cannot tell the bride that the dress will be ready next week. The wedding is on Saturday. Whether the dress is ready or not, the bride walks down the aisle on Saturday. That reality shapes every decision we make in the workshop.

The first thing I check on every bridesmaid dress is the hem length against the group. Bridesmaids are not the same height. A party of six can have a two-hundred-millimetre spread between the tallest and the shortest. If every dress is hemmed to its own bridesmaid's knee, the row of hems at the altar will be uneven, and that unevenness shows on every photograph taken from the front. So we choose one finished length for the whole party, based on the tallest bridesmaid and the wedding shoes, and every dress is cut to that same length. Some bridesmaids end up with a hem that sits slightly shorter on them than it would if we had hemmed each dress individually. That is fine. On the group, the hems read identical. That is what matters. If you are searching for a bridesmaid dress alteration service near me now open and the tailor asks about the group before asking about the individual, that is a good sign.

The second thing I check is the strap height on each bridesmaid. Straps are where most bridesmaid dress alterations go wrong, and straps are also the hardest part of the dress to adjust cleanly. If a strap is shortened by half a centimetre too much, it cuts into the shoulder. If it is shortened by half a centimetre too little, it slips off during the ceremony. On six bridesmaids with different shoulder slopes, the strap adjustment has to be done individually per bridesmaid even though the strap position on the finished dress has to look identical from the front. So we cut each strap to fit its own shoulder, then we check that the visible part of every strap sits at the same point on the neckline across the group. That is the discipline that separates a coordinated wedding party from a group of individually altered dresses.

The third thing I check is the waist seam position. On a bridesmaid dress with a defined waist, the waist seam has to sit at the natural waist of the bridesmaid wearing the dress. On a party of six, that waist seam sits at six different heights above the floor, because the bridesmaids are different heights. But from the front of a church, the waist seam has to read at the same height relative to the bodice, which means the bodice length has to be the same across the whole party. If one bridesmaid has a shorter torso and one has a longer torso, we adjust the bodice length on the shorter bridesmaid to match the group. The dress is then slightly longer in the torso for her than her own body needs, but the group reads identical. That is the trade-off and it is always the right one for a wedding party.

The fourth thing I check is the fabric behaviour on the specific dress. A chiffon dress behaves completely differently from a satin dress under the needle. A silk dress behaves differently again. On a mixed party where the bride has chosen a chiffon dress for some bridesmaids and a satin dress for others, we treat each fabric group separately, but we still coordinate the hem line and the waist line across the entire party, not just within each fabric group. That means we might finish the satin dresses on day three and the chiffon dresses on day five, but the final delivery happens together. Coordination is not just about the fit. It is about the timing and the finish quality being identical across the whole party.

The fifth thing I check is the deadline. Every wedding party we take on is scheduled backward from the wedding date. If the wedding is on a Saturday, every dress has to be delivered on the previous Saturday, which is seven days before the wedding. That gives the bridesmaids a full week to try the dresses on, wash their hair, get their nails done, and have the dresses steamed one more time before the day. If the delivery slips, we lose that buffer, and the bride feels the pressure. So I plan the schedule backwards from the delivery date, not forwards from the collection date. That means some dresses are finished early and sit on padded hangers for a week, and some dresses finish on the delivery day. It is not the most efficient way to run a workshop, but it is the only way to guarantee a wedding party is ready on time. If you need a bridesmaid dress alteration near me now open and the tailor promises a delivery date that sounds too good to be true, ask them how they plan the schedule backwards from the wedding day. If they do not have a clear answer, they have not worked on a full wedding party before.

Fourteen years of working with bridesmaid parties has taught me that brides care most about one thing. They care that the row of photographs on their wedding day shows a group that looks coordinated. Not identical, because every woman has her own body, but coordinated. The right tailor for a wedding party is the one who understands that and works from the group down to the individual, not from the individual up to the group. If you are a bride planning a wedding party and you have four to eight bridesmaids across Nairobi, send us a WhatsApp message with the wedding date, the number of bridesmaids, and a photo of the dress. I will tell you straight whether the timeline works, what the whole party will cost, and what the process looks like from the day we collect to the day we deliver. Payment is on collection, at the delivery stage, so every bridesmaid tries the dress on before paying. That is the standard, and it is the reason most brides who work with us bring their own daughters back to us years later.

From budget to designer, we alter every dress the same way

How we approach bridesmaid dresses across every tier, from market satin to hand-beaded silk

Some tailoring shops only work on high-end dresses and quietly send budget brides away. Other shops only work on mid-tier dresses and refuse to touch a designer silk gown because the work is too slow. We do not. Every bridesmaid dress that comes into the workshop gets the same careful handling, and the price you pay is based on what the dress is, not on what we think the bride can afford. Here is what a bride can expect at each tier, and how we approach the work at each level.

Budget bridesmaid dresses, straightforward work at a fair price

A budget bridesmaid dress, cut from polyester satin or simple polyester chiffon and priced between KSh 3,000 and KSh 10,000, is not a dress we try to turn into a designer gown. It is a dress we make fit. When a bride brings us a budget bridesmaid dress for a hem shortening, we check the fabric strength first, because cheap polyester can be weak at the hem after a couple of seasons or a single dry clean. If the fabric is strong, we shorten the hem with a standard machine stitch, press it through muslin at medium heat, and return it within 3 to 5 working days. If the fabric is weak, we reinforce the new hem from inside so the shortened edge does not fray. Either way, the price is between KSh 1,500 and KSh 2,500, and we tell the bride upfront that a budget dress is worth a straightforward alteration, not a full restyle. There is a right price for every dress, and we do not pretend a KSh 5,000 dress is worth a KSh 8,000 restyle.

Mid-tier bridesmaid dresses, careful work with a long timeline

A mid-tier bridesmaid dress, cut from satin, crepe, chiffon or a chiffon over satin combination and priced between KSh 10,000 and KSh 30,000, is where our standard bridesmaid dress service lives. These are dresses worth altering carefully, because the fabric is good enough that a proper alteration will hold for the wedding day and beyond, and the dress will be worn again for other formal occasions. When a bride brings us a mid-tier bridesmaid dress, we go through the full service. We check the fabric, check the lining, check the beadwork or lace if present, quote each alteration separately, and press the dress through two layers of muslin at medium heat. Bodice take-in on a mid-tier dress is done from the side seams only, never the front panel, because the front panel has the neckline detail and the bust shaping, and both of those are fixed by the original maker. Standard alterations on a mid-tier dress are KSh 1,500 to KSh 3,500, and the turnaround is 4 to 6 working days.

Premium bridesmaid dresses, the full hand-finished service

A premium bridesmaid dress, cut from designer silk, silk chiffon, silk crepe, or a beaded silk construction and priced above KSh 40,000, gets the full hand-finished service. That means every stitch is set by hand where the original was hand-set, the dress is steamed rather than pressed, silk is worked at low tension with the finest needles, and beads are removed and re-attached by hand. When we alter a Jenny Yoo, an Amsale, a Dessy or a BHLDN bridesmaid dress, we also source matching thread and bead colours through specialist suppliers, which adds 2 to 4 working days to the turnaround. Premium bridesmaid dress alterations start at KSh 3,500 and go up from there depending on the amount of hand work involved. If the dress is a limited-run colour or a custom-dyed batch that cannot be sourced again, we tell the bride upfront and quote the closest specialist match rather than risk the dress. Book premium designer bridesmaid dress alterations near me now open with free pickup and 48 hour rush delivery in Nairobi Kenya and we will tell you upfront whether your specific dress can be done in the rush window or whether it needs the full timeline.

What every tier has in common

Every bridesmaid dress that comes to our workshop gets the same four checks, regardless of tier. First, we check the fabric strength at the point of alteration. Second, we check the lining and any internal construction like boning or a corselette. Third, we check the beadwork, lace or appliqué if the dress has any, because those are the details most likely to be affected by the alteration. Fourth, we check the group coordination if the dress is part of a wedding party, because the dress has to fit its own bridesmaid and still match the row. Those four checks take about fifteen minutes on a budget dress and about forty-five minutes on a premium dress, because the premium dress has more details that need to be preserved. The checking is free, whether or not the bride goes ahead with the alteration. If we tell a bride that her dress should not be altered, we do not charge for the assessment. That is the standard we have kept since we started, and it is the reason most of our bridesmaid dress clients come back with a second or third party within a few years.

What a bride brings to the first WhatsApp message

The fastest way to get an accurate bridesmaid dress alteration quote is to send us six things on WhatsApp. First, the wedding date. Second, the number of bridesmaids and where they live in Nairobi. Third, a photo of one of the dresses on a hanger, front and back. Fourth, a close-up of the fabric, so we can identify the cloth. Fifth, a close-up of any beadwork, lace or appliqué. Sixth, if the dress has a designer label inside, a photo of the label. With those six things we can tell the bride within an hour which alterations the party needs, what the total price will be, what the timeline looks like, and whether a rush service is available. That is the whole intake process and it takes about five minutes on the bride's side. Book bridesmaid dress alterations near me now open with free WhatsApp consultation and pay on collection Nairobi and we will reply to your message with a group quote the same day.

Why the fit guarantee covers every bridesmaid dress tier

Every bridesmaid dress we alter is covered by our fit guarantee, whether it is a KSh 5,000 market satin dress or a KSh 60,000 beaded silk gown. If the dress does not fit when the rider delivers it, the bridesmaid does not pay. The rider takes the dress back to the workshop, we adjust it free of charge, and the rider returns it within 48 hours at no extra charge. The only limits on the guarantee are the natural limits of the fabric and the deadline. We cannot lift a permanent shine that was already on the dress before we altered it. We cannot reverse a previous alteration that cut too deep. We cannot promise that a beaded dress altered at short notice will have every bead perfectly re-attached in time for the wedding. Those limits are explained to every bride upfront on the WhatsApp message where we give the group quote, so there is no surprise at delivery. Everything else is covered. That is the promise we have kept for fourteen years and it applies to every dress at every tier without exception.

Why this matters to your wallet

A KSh 2,500 alteration on a KSh 15,000 mid-tier bridesmaid dress is worth doing, because the dress will last through the wedding day and several formal occasions after. A KSh 8,000 restyle on a KSh 5,000 budget dress is not worth doing, and we tell the bride that. A KSh 4,500 beaded hem re-set on a KSh 50,000 designer gown is one of the best-value jobs in tailoring, because it adds a lifetime of wearability to a dress that the bridesmaid will keep for years. The brides who get the most out of bridesmaid dress alterations are the ones who understand that the right amount of money to spend on a dress is proportional to what the dress is worth, and not to what the tailor can sell them. That is the same principle we hold on darning and invisible mending and on zipper replacement work.

How long do bridesmaid dress alterations take?
Standard bridesmaid dress alterations (hem shortening on simple fabrics, strap adjustment, bodice take-in on a plain dress, invisible zip replacement, lining patch) take 3 to 5 working days. Bodice work on a fitted or boned bodice, waist re-set, back closure conversion, corset back re-lacing, lining replacement and lace overlay re-anchoring take 4 to 6 working days. Silk hemming, beaded hem work, beaded strap replacement and beadwork re-attachment take 5 to 7 working days because beads are removed and re-attached by hand and silk is steamed rather than pressed. For a wedding party we recommend starting six weeks before the wedding date. See our bridal and formal wear alterations page for the same turnaround tiers applied to bridal gowns.
Can you alter bridesmaid dresses for a whole wedding party?
Yes, and wedding party coordination is one of the jobs we take on most often. For parties of four to eight bridesmaids we collect each dress from each bridesmaid separately on a single agreed collection day, measure every bridesmaid in person in the wedding shoes, draft a pattern per bridesmaid, cut the hems to a coordinated finished length across the whole party, run a group fitting day, finish every dress by hand where needed, and deliver the whole party on one day two weeks before the wedding. Bulk rate is 15 percent off per dress from three dresses and 20 percent off from six dresses. Free pickup and delivery across every Nairobi estate, payment on collection.
Do you offer free pickup and delivery for bridesmaid dresses in Nairobi?
Yes, and it is free every time, anywhere in Nairobi. For a single bridesmaid dress we collect from the bride or from the bridesmaid herself. For a wedding party we collect from each bridesmaid's home or office on a single agreed collection day. Every dress is collected on a padded hanger, never folded into a bag, because folding chiffon, satin or tulle destroys the drape. We deliver back the same way, on a padded hanger, in a breathable garment bag. Payment is made on collection, so the bride or the bridesmaid tries the dress on before paying. We cover Industrial Area, Nairobi CBD, Runda, Kilimani, Westlands, Karen, Lavington, Parklands, Kileleshwa, Gigiri, Muthaiga, Kasarani, Roysambu, Utawala, Ongata Rongai, Syokimau, Mlolongo, Kitengela and every estate in between.
Can you shorten a chiffon bridesmaid dress without ruining the hem?
Yes, and chiffon is one of the fabrics most Nairobi tailors avoid because they use a machine stitch on the hem. A machine stitch stiffens a chiffon hem and destroys the natural movement of the fabric. Chiffon hem shortening at FitFixClothesAlterations.co.ke is done with a hand-rolled hem, where the edge is folded over twice at about two millimetres and stitched by hand with a fine needle. This preserves the drape of the dress and matches the way the original hem was finished at the factory. Chiffon hem shortening starts at KSh 2,500. On chiffon with a beaded hem, the beads are removed first, the hem is rolled by hand, and the beads are re-attached at the same spacing. Beaded chiffon hem work starts at KSh 4,000.
Can you alter a beaded bridesmaid dress?
Yes, and beaded bridesmaid dresses are the slowest alteration work we do. Every bead is a small project. Beads are removed one at a time before any cut is made, placed in a tray, the fabric underneath is altered, and every bead is re-attached by hand at the original spacing and in the original order. On a full beaded bodice this can take four to five hours of hand work for a single alteration. Beaded bridesmaid dress alterations start at KSh 4,500 and take 5 to 7 working days. Rush service is not available on beaded work because beads cannot be rushed. If you need a beaded bridesmaid dress altered for a wedding that is less than four weeks away, tell us the date upfront and we will tell you straight whether the timeline is realistic.
Can you alter a silk bridesmaid dress without leaving needle marks?
Yes, and silk is the most delicate cloth we work with on bridesmaid dresses. Every silk bridesmaid dress we alter is worked at low tension with the finest needles we stock, and the dress is steamed rather than pressed because a hot iron on silk leaves a permanent shine or a burn. Silk hems are hand-rolled and hand-finished, and every seam that was hand-finished at the factory is re-set by hand. After the alteration, we rest the dress for 24 hours before the final fitting, because silk relaxes after it is worked and a dress that looks right on the bench will drift slightly by the time it reaches the bridesmaid. Silk bridesmaid dress hem shortening starts at KSh 3,000.
If a bridesmaid lives outside Nairobi, we can guide the maid of honour to take her measurements on a video call, but the final fitting still has to be in person if the dress matters.
What happens if a bridesmaid cannot make the group fitting day?
That happens, and it is one of the reasons we recommend starting the alterations six weeks before the wedding. If a bridesmaid cannot make the group fitting day because she is travelling or has a work commitment, we can do a video fitting with her, guided by the maid of honour, and adjust based on that. The video fitting is not as good as an in-person fitting, but on a dress that has already been measured once, it is usually enough. If the bridesmaid is in Nairobi but busy, we can send the finished dress by rider to her home for a try-on, wait for her feedback, and pick it up again the same day if anything needs adjusting. Both options are free.
Do you alter bridesmaid dresses that were bought online or abroad?
Yes, and this is one of the most common jobs we take on. If the bridesmaid dresses were bought online from a UK, US or European retailer, or brought back from abroad, and the fit is wrong when they arrive, we alter them the same way we alter dresses bought in Nairobi. The most common fixes on online-bought bridesmaid dresses are hem shortening, bodice take-in, strap adjustment and invisible zip replacement. Send us photos of the dresses and the measurement details for each bridesmaid, and we will tell you within an hour which alterations the party needs and what the total cost will be. Payment is on collection, so each bridesmaid tries her dress on before paying.
Can you alter a bridesmaid dress that is too small?
Sometimes. Letting out a bridesmaid dress only works if the dress has seam allowance at the side seams or the centre back. Most bridesmaid dresses have one to two centimetres of allowance, which allows a let-out of about two to three centimetres total. If the dress needs more than that, the options are to add a matching fabric panel at the back, to replace the entire back panel, or to accept the size. We tell the bride upfront which is realistic for her specific dress. Bridesmaid dress let-out starts at KSh 3,000. Send a photo of the inside of the dress at the side seam and one of the back zip area, and we will tell you within the hour whether the let-out is possible.
Do you alter bridesmaid dresses with a lace overlay?
Yes, and lace overlay is one of the constructions we handle most carefully because the lace pattern has to be preserved exactly.
Can you alter a bridesmaid dress for a pregnant bridesmaid?
What is the difference between a bridesmaid dress alteration and a bridal gown alteration?
A bridal gown alteration is usually a single dress for one bride, with more hand-finishing, more detail preservation, and a timeline that is measured in weeks rather than days. A bridesmaid dress alteration is a coordinated job for four to eight dresses, each fitted to its own bridesmaid, and the coordination of the group matters as much as the fit of each dress. Bridesmaid dresses are usually cut from lighter, more delicate fabrics than a bridal gown, and the deadline is harder because the whole party has to be ready on the same day. See our bridal and formal wear alterations page for the single-bride gown service.
What if I am not happy with the bridesmaid dress alteration?
Because payment is made on collection, the bride or the bridesmaid tries the dress on in front of the rider before paying. If anything is not right, the hem line, the bodice fit, the strap height, the waist position, do not pay. Hand the dress back and we will re-collect it and adjust it free of charge under our fit guarantee. On bridesmaid dresses, adjustments are more limited than on lighter garments because cutting chiffon, satin or silk is permanent and the fabric can only be re-cut a certain number of times. But we will always work with you to find the closest possible fix, and we will never charge for a re-do. In fourteen years of tailoring, we have never charged a client for a re-do.
Can you alter the bridesmaid dresses a second time after the wedding for another occasion?
Yes, and this is one of the reasons we recommend preserving the seam allowance on every bridesmaid dress we alter. After the wedding, if a bridesmaid wants to wear the same dress to another formal event, or have it converted to a different length or a different neckline, we can do that work at any time. Because we kept notes on the original measurements and the alterations we did, the second alteration is faster and cheaper than starting over. Bridesmaid dress re-alteration starts at KSh 1,500 depending on the change. Send us a message with the bride's name and the wedding date so we can pull the original file.
Do you alter bridesmaid dresses for weddings outside Nairobi?
Sometimes. If the wedding is outside Nairobi but the bridesmaids are in Nairobi, we can alter the dresses here and the bride can carry them to the wedding location. If the bridesmaids themselves are outside Nairobi, we can arrange a courier drop-off to our Industrial Area workshop and a courier return, but the free pickup and delivery service covers Nairobi only. For weddings in Naivasha, Nakuru, Nanyuki, Mombasa or Kisumu, the most practical arrangement is often to have the whole wedding party measured in Nairobi, alter the dresses here, and ship them to the wedding location two weeks before the date. Message us the wedding location and the bridesmaid locations and we will work out the fastest arrangement for your specific party.
Real wedding parties, real coordination

What brides say about their bridesmaid dress alterations

We do not collect testimonials systematically. These are the ones that stayed with me, the wedding parties where the work really mattered and the bride came back months later to tell me the row of hems still showed level in every photograph.

My sister is a size 8 in the shoulders and a size 12 at the waist and she had never found a bridesmaid dress that fit her. When my bridal party ordered matching silk chiffon dresses in the same size, her dress was going to be impossible. David took her measurements and told me upfront that the bodice would have to be taken in at the side seams and the waist re-set to sit higher on her torso. It took seven days because of the silk. When she tried it on at the group fitting, the dress fit her exactly like it fit the other bridesmaids at the row. You could not tell her dress was the one that had all the work. That is the standard.

Njeri K. · Lavington · Silk chiffon bridesmaid dress, bodice take-in and waist re-set for a bridesmaid with an unusual body shape

My bridesmaid dresses had beaded straps and a beaded hem and I was worried that any alteration would look wrong. David explained that on beaded work he removes every bead before cutting and re-attaches them by hand at the original spacing. He charged KSh 4,500 per dress for the beaded hem work and it took seven days for the whole party. On the wedding day the beads sat correctly on every hem and none of them came off. I saw two beads on the floor at the reception and both were from my own dress, not the bridesmaids. That tells you the work held.

Ochieng' O. · Runda · Beaded bridesmaid dresses, hem re-set with bead re-attachment by hand

One of my bridesmaids was five months pregnant at the wedding and I did not know how to handle her dress. David suggested a two-stage plan. He altered the dress to fit her at five months with a discreet panel at the side seam, and then did a second adjustment three weeks before the wedding when she was almost seven months. The panel blended into the dress so well that you cannot see it. Total was around KSh 4,000 for both stages. She was comfortable the whole day and the dress read as part of the group. That was the part of the wedding planning I was most stressed about and David solved it in one WhatsApp conversation.

Kimani W. · Westlands · Pregnant bridesmaid, two-stage alteration with side panel

I found David on Google at 6am on a Saturday because the bridesmaid dresses had arrived from a designer two weeks late and the wedding was four weeks away. I searched for a bridesmaid dress alteration near me now open and his name came up. He replied on WhatsApp within ten minutes, told me upfront that the timeline was tight but doable if we started the collection that Saturday, and gave me a group quote in writing before I even committed. The whole party was collected that afternoon. The dresses came back in five days and every one fit correctly. If you are a bride in panic mode, this is the tailor to call.
