Why a Wedding Dress Is Not Just Another Alteration

A wedding dress is the single most demanding garment any tailor will ever work on. It has to fit perfectly on one specific day, to one specific person, with no margin for error and no second chance. It is usually the most expensive garment the bride has ever owned. It is often made from the most delicate fabric in the wardrobe — silk, chiffon, crepe, tulle, satin — with layers of lining, interlining, boning, lace, beading and, in many cases, family history stitched into every seam. And it has to be finished to a fixed date that cannot move.

That combination is why a wedding dress is not the sort of garment that gets handed to a general alterations shop. It requires a craftsman who understands the internal structure of a bridal gown, who can open a seam without damaging the lace or beading sitting over it, who knows the difference between a hem that is one centimetre too long and one that is one centimetre too short, and who will not force a fit that the fabric cannot take. That is what we have built the bridal side of the workshop around, and it is why most of our bridal bookings come from brides who were referred by a previous bride.

The second thing that makes a wedding dress different is the timing. Most wedding dresses in Nairobi arrive six to twelve weeks before the wedding date, and the alterations have to fit into the gap between arrival and the wedding day. Some brides have longer, some have almost none. A programme that runs six to eight weeks ahead of the wedding gives enough time for two fittings and a final adjustment. A programme that runs four weeks ahead is possible but compressed. A programme that runs two weeks ahead can only handle simple work. Getting the timing right at the start is what makes the rest of the programme work.

The third thing is the number of people involved. A wedding dress alteration is rarely just about the bride. The mother of the bride, the maid of honour, the bridesmaids, the flower girl, sometimes the groom's mother and sisters. Those garments are usually altered by the same workshop on the same booking so that everything sits correctly together on the day, and the whole bridal party comes back on one delivery. That is why we offer the bridal party package as a single line item rather than pricing each member separately.

What We Do on a Wedding Dress

Hemming measured to your wedding shoe

Hemming is the single most important alteration on a wedding dress because it sets the line of the gown on the day. We measure the hem to the exact shoe you will wear on the wedding, not to a guess, and we leave enough depth in the hem to allow a small adjustment at the second fitting. Hemming only starts from KES 6,000. See bridal alterations for the full bridal service.

Bodice rebuilds and corset installation

Bodice rebuilds start from KES 14,000 and cover the bust, waist, back and internal structure. Corset installation starts from KES 12,000 and covers a full corset with boning, a lace-up back where required and a matching inner lining. Both are done with the lace, beading and embroidery removed and resecured by hand where necessary so the original decoration sits correctly over the new seam.

Bustle construction

Bustle construction starts from KES 4,500 and adds two to five concealed hooks or ribbons depending on the weight and length of the train. The bustle is fitted and tested at the second fitting so the bride and her maid of honour know exactly how to lift the train at the reception and how to fix it if it comes loose.

Lining replacement and structural work

Lining replacement starts from KES 9,000 and is done where the interior lining has worn, has gone soft, or needs to be reseated to accommodate a bodice rebuild or corset. We use matching fabric weight and finish so the lining sits correctly under the outer gown and does not show at the neckline, the sleeve or the back.

Lace, beading and embroidery preservation

Where a gown has heavy lace, beading or embroidery, the decorative layer is removed carefully at the seam line, the underlying seam is opened and reshaped, and the decoration is re-applied by hand so that the pattern continues correctly across the new seam. This is the most time-consuming part of most bridal alterations and is the reason a basic alteration on a beaded gown takes longer than a basic alteration on a plain satin gown.

Full gown restoration

Full restoration starts from KES 25,000 and covers a gown that has been stored for years, a vintage or heirloom gown being brought back into service, or a gown that needs substantial work across multiple areas — lining, corsetry, hem, straps, decoration and structure — as one programme. Restoration is priced on photo and on inspection because the work varies significantly from gown to gown.

Bridal Programme Timeline

The standard programme runs six to eight weeks ahead of the wedding date. Every bridal booking is scheduled against this timeline, and we confirm the schedule with you at booking.

  • 8 weeks beforeFirst WhatsApp message with photos and wedding date. Firm quote returned the same day.
  • 7 weeks beforeGown collected on a scheduled pickup, in a protective garment bag, on a dedicated rider. Assessed the same day.
  • 5 to 6 weeks beforeFirst fitting. Main adjustments tacked in place, bodice and hem checked against the wedding shoe.
  • 3 to 4 weeks beforeSecond fitting. Final adjustments, bustle tested, decorative layers checked.
  • 1 to 2 weeks beforeFinal pickup of the finished gown, in a protective garment bag, with the bustle demonstrated if the bride brings her maid of honour.
  • Rush programmeInside four weeks is possible where capacity allows and is quoted at booking. Inside two weeks is only possible for simple alterations such as straps or a small hem adjustment.

What You Need to Bring to the First Fitting

Bring the shoes you will wear on the wedding day, or the exact heel height if the shoes are not with you yet. Bring the correct bridal underwear for the gown — strapless, low-back, seamless, or whichever style the gown was designed for. Bring the gown itself if you are coming in person, or we will have it at the workshop already from pickup. If you have a veil, a hairpiece or jewellery that will change the shape of the neckline or the back, bring those too. The more of the wedding-day set is present at the first fitting, the more accurate the fit will be on the day.

Why Wedding Dress Alterations Matter More in Nairobi

Nairobi is not an easy climate for a wedding dress. The city sits at around 1,700 metres with a long dry season, a short rainy season, strong daytime sun, cool mornings and warm middays. A bride will usually be wearing the gown for eight to fourteen hours on the wedding day, moving between a morning ceremony, a photo shoot in the open air and a reception that may run late into the evening. The gown takes a genuine beating on that single day, and the alteration has to be built to handle all of it.

The first thing Nairobi weather does is swell and relax fabric across the day. A silk, chiffon or crepe gown that fits perfectly in the cool morning can feel tighter in the afternoon when the bride's body is warm and the fabric has taken the humidity. That is why we always advise a bodice fit that is snug at the first fitting but not tight, and why we leave enough depth in the bodice to allow a small adjustment if the bride's measurements change between fittings. A gown fitted too tightly on a cool Nairobi morning will be uncomfortable and unreliable by the midafternoon.

The second thing Nairobi weather does is stress the hem and the train. Outdoor photography on grass, on gravel or in gardens picks up moisture in the hem, and the train picks up fine grit. That moisture and grit work into the hem and the train structure faster than most brides expect, and if the hem is not finished to a proper depth with a clean edge, the hem will show dirt along the fold by the end of the day. We always recommend a hem depth that lets the bride lift the gown slightly during outdoor photography so the hem edge stays clean, and a hem edge finish that holds its shape through a full day of wear.

The third thing Nairobi weddings demand is the bustle. Kenyan weddings almost always include an outdoor photography session, and almost always move to a reception indoors or under a tent. That is a full change of environment for the gown, and the train has to lift cleanly and stay lifted for hours. A bustle that is only tested while standing still will often fail on the dance floor, which is why we test every bustle with the bride and the maid of honour at the second fitting, and why we always install more points than look necessary — three points on a short train, four or five on a full-length cathedral train.

Finally, Nairobi weddings often run late. The ceremony may start at 10am with a photography session that runs to 1pm, followed by lunch at 3pm and a reception that starts at 5pm and finishes at 11pm or midnight. That is a fourteen-hour day for the gown. A wedding dress that is altered correctly will hold its shape and its fit across all fourteen hours. A dress that is only altered to look right in a fitting room will start to move and to gap within the first few hours. We build every bridal alteration around the fourteen-hour day, not around the fitting room.

Rule of thumb for brides: book your wedding dress alterations the moment the gown arrives in Nairobi, not the week before the wedding. The difference between a comfortable bridal programme and a compressed one is almost always time, and time is what protects the alteration. A bridal programme that runs eight weeks ahead will always produce a better result than a programme that runs two weeks ahead.

Altered by David Ochieng, 14 Years on the Bench

Every wedding dress collected at FitFix is worked on at the Industrial Area workshop by David Ochieng, the workshop's master tailor and bridal alterations specialist with fourteen years of experience. David trained and worked on tailoring and leather repair at Manix Clothing Store City Walk and at Italian Mens Wear in Nairobi before opening FitFix. He has since handled hundreds of bridal programmes, from a simple hem and strap adjustment on a gown that fit well to full rebuilds on imported gowns and full restorations on heirloom gowns that had been stored for years.

David's approach to a wedding dress is deliberately careful. He assesses the fabric, the structure and the decoration first, and he works on the least visible seam wherever possible. He removes lace, beading and embroidery by hand where the alteration crosses a decorative section, reshapes the underlying seam, and reapplies the decoration so the pattern continues correctly. He builds corsetry and boning that matches the bride's frame rather than the standard model the gown was made for, and he tests the fit at two fittings, not one. Most importantly, he works to the wedding date. If a change of plan or a change of measurement means the programme has to move, the schedule is adjusted around the wedding, not the other way around.

Wedding Dress Alteration FAQs in Nairobi

Ten questions brides ask before booking. Every answer matches what you get on WhatsApp.

How much does wedding dress alteration cost in Nairobi?

Wedding dress alterations in Nairobi start from KES 8,000 for basic alterations covering hem, straps and simple bodice adjustment. Hemming only starts from KES 6,000. Strap and shoulder adjustment starts from KES 3,500. Bustle construction starts from KES 4,500. Bodice rebuild starts from KES 14,000. Corset installation starts from KES 12,000. Lining replacement starts from KES 9,000. Full rebuild starts from KES 18,000. Full restoration starts from KES 25,000. Bridal party package covering the bride and up to four additional members starts from KES 15,000. Send photos on WhatsApp 0705 728 896 for a firm price.

When should I book wedding dress alterations in Nairobi?

We recommend booking wedding dress alterations in Nairobi at least six to eight weeks before the wedding date. This allows one first fitting, a second fitting ten to fourteen days later, and a final pickup about five days before the wedding. Rush bridal work inside four weeks is possible where capacity allows and is quoted at booking. Inside two weeks is only possible for simple alterations such as straps or a small hem adjustment.

Do you offer free pickup and delivery for wedding dress alterations in Nairobi?

Yes. Pickup and delivery is free across Nairobi including Westlands, Karen, Kilimani, Lavington, Kileleshwa, Parklands, Riverside, Langata, Kasarani, Embakasi, Ngong, Ruiru, Kiambu Road, South B, South C and every other estate in the ring. Wedding dress pickup is done on a scheduled slot with a dedicated rider who handles the gown only, so there is no risk of the dress being crushed or mixed with other garments. Gowns are carried in a protective garment bag on collection and on return.

What is included in a wedding dress basic alteration?

A basic wedding dress alteration covers hemming to the correct length for the shoe you will wear on the day, strap or shoulder adjustment, simple bodice adjustment at the bust and waist, and one bustle point so the train can be lifted for the reception. It does not cover full bodice rebuilds, corset installation, full lining replacement or heavy lace and beading work, which are quoted separately. A basic alteration is appropriate for a gown that fits well overall and just needs the length, straps and one or two small adjustments.

Can you rebuild a wedding dress bodice if the dress does not fit properly?

Yes. Full bodice rebuilds start from KES 14,000 and cover the bust, waist, back and, where needed, the corset interior structure. A bodice rebuild is a substantial job because it involves opening the gown along the side seams and the centre back, refitting the boning and the interlining to the bride's frame, resetting the waistline and reclosing the gown. Most bodice rebuilds take two fittings to complete correctly.

Can you install a corset in a wedding dress that does not have one?

Yes. Corset installation starts from KES 12,000 and covers the fitting and stitching of a full corset interior with boning, a lace-up back where required and a matching inner lining so the corset does not show through the gown. Corsetry is often requested for a gown that was bought with a zip back but that would sit more securely on the bride with a lace-up corset for the wedding day.

Can you preserve lace, beading and embroidery during the alteration?

Yes. Preserving lace, beading and embroidery is the single most important part of wedding dress alteration. Every gown is opened along the least visible seams, the lace and beading are removed and resecured by hand where necessary, and the alteration is closed so that the original decoration sits correctly over the new seam. Where the beading or lace is fragile, it is reinforced underneath before the seam is closed. Heavy beading takes longer and is quoted on photo.

How many fittings do I need for wedding dress alterations in Nairobi?

Most brides need two fittings. The first fitting happens ten to fourteen days after the first pickup, when the main adjustments have been tacked in place. The second fitting happens about ten days later when the final adjustments have been made and the gown is ready for a final check. Full bodice rebuilds and corset installations sometimes need a third fitting. Rush programmes inside three weeks may compress to one fitting plus a final pickup.

What is a bridal bustle and do I need one on my wedding dress?

A bustle is a way of lifting the train of the wedding dress up and securing it at the back of the gown so that the bride can walk and dance at the reception without the train dragging on the floor. Bustle construction starts from KES 4,500 and adds two to five concealed hooks or ribbons depending on the weight and length of the train. Almost every bride with a train longer than half a metre needs a bustle, and brides who skip it often regret it on the dance floor.

Can I get a bridal party package covering the bride and the bridesmaids together?

Yes. The bridal party package starts from KES 15,000 and covers the bride's gown plus up to four additional members of the party on one pickup, one invoice and one delivery. The package can include bridesmaid dresses, maid of honour dress, mother of the bride outfit and flower girl dress. Each member is fitted to the correct standard within the same programme, and all items are returned together ahead of the wedding date.
